This is a struggle for me.

I LOVE the look of a naked bike.

I PREFER to wear an open face helmet.

But anything longer than a couple hundred miles or colder than maybe 60F and I miss a BIG windshield.

The answer is simply to wear a FF helmet. If I do that my Dart Marlin on the V7 is all day long good in all conditions.

But I'm stubborn..  I really should get that Shark convertible helmet so I can change halfway through a given day's ride.

Anyway, I get the windshield thing. Another reason why I love the Harley detachables. I can go from a big windshield to naked in less than 30 seconds or vice versa.

Appreciate all the input but the truth is, I am likely going back to a V7 and selling the G.  The Griso has been a great amount of fun and it is likely the best braking, best handling motorcycle I've ever driven in my life; yet, several comfort issues specific to me are pushing me back towards the V7 that I previously enjoyed so much.  Primarily - and this again is certainly not the bike's fault - I have 3 slipped discs that even with a Corbin seat, peg lowers and bar risers, start barking at me like mad and limit my time on the G to about 60 miles tops in any one sitting.  With the V7 I had at least a couple 300ish mile days under my belt with no problems on my discs.  But there are other issues as well; the V7 just fit me better all the way around.  And besides that, the Griso seems to encourage some behavior that is not good for my health nor license record.

Wow, Brian.

Would you mind educating us on the ergonomic differences. Cause to someone like me they were small.

Either way, hope you find your bliss!

Thats a pity but at the end of the day if it doesn't work for you it doesn't work for you. Sell or trade with no regrets. Griso isn't for everyone.

Kev, first let me say I do not think the Griso is a typically uncomfortable bike but I do think it may not be for everyone as Pete states (what bike is?).  And, I think my issues with it are absolutely certainly more specific to me than the bike.  One thing for certain is it is a phenomenal machine, especially that engine and the bike's handling.  Sublime.  It still astounds me.  Way more solid and stable in turns than even my former Street Triple.  The only bike I've ever ridden in my life that even approached it as far as handling is the much more dedicated and focused KTM 950 Supermoto I once drove.  And that engine.  Woof.  I still can hardly believe Guzzi hasn't stuck that mill in a retro bike to spank the new Triumphs  :thumb:

Because the Griso is so awesome I invested more money into it to try and make it fit "me" than I've ever put into a bike's ergonomics:  Rox risers, 2" peg lowers, then later 1" peg lowers, Corbin seat, my goofy shield as pictured.  In fact - and the picture of my bike and the associated shield on it here  would attest - I would argue I tried to turn the Griso into something it is surely not - a more lazy and relaxed almost Goldwingish touring ride.  I respect the Griso that it steadfastly refused to become this.

Couple the above with the fact that I have specific physical reasons me and the G didn't totally fit.  Beginning about 10 years ago I slipped several discs in my back.  Over the years I've repeatedly reinjured these discs (about once every year) though I've now (knock on wood) gotten to a place where I've developed my torso and physically active enough to keep the discs from jumping again in the last two and a half years.  Even still, they don't like to be placed in certain bend/pressure points and they let me know it.  After riding the Griso 65 miles several nights ago, I came home and my back was greatly relieved to get off the bike.  Later at 5am I got up and they were really letting me know then.  I also have a 32" inseam.  My crappy back and the bike have been at odds since day one.  I tried softening and then later even stiffening the rear to no back benefit.  Couple my back issues and my inseam with the fact the G has higher pegs and is wider at the knees than my former V7, and with more reach to the bars that required my back to bend more than it liked even with Rox risers.  As I sat on a V7 at a dealership yesterday there was a tremendous sigh of relief and lazy comfort, a feeling of home almost compared to my active and dedicated riding on the G.  And even 300 plus miles a day in the saddle of the V7, back seemed to be mostly fine with it though my backside did require an Airhawk for those same feats on the V7.

So I guess what I'm saying is the ergonomic differences between a V7 and a Griso may not indeed be great to everyone, but they are certainly there, and my specific issues make them seem moreso to me.

Not for this thread but there are also other reasons, though less on the reasoning scale than those specific physical ones I mention above, that I will be going back to the V7 and these compiment the V7 and tell me what kind of rider I am today and prefer to be now.

I have had better success adapting the Griso to me but having gone through the back problems (mostly under control now) that is one area that will dictate in very strong terms what you can and can not suffer.

Have you checked out the Norge at all? I've tried to turn the Griso into a Norge, yet for some reason I have a hard time warming up to the Norge. sigh. At least the Griso and I seem to have come to a mutual understanding so I think I'll keep her until I collect social security.  Then I'll look at my options.

Also, sounds like the V9 would be a real hoot too.

Damn, Brian:  I thought women were the fickle ones....You have had more bikes lately than Tommy Manville had wives.  Well, you got away a lot cheaper than he.

I hope the V-7 pushes all the right buttons for you.

Brian,

Thanks for that explanation.

I can relate to having reasons to pass on what seems on paper to be the superior performing bike (Griso) for diverging like a V7.

It's been a while since I rode a Griso, but I didn't realize the foot pegs were higher and thought I remembered a riding position that was more similar than different. But like you say, if it's just the right difference for your body then well who can argue with that.

Best of luck.

Much thanks.  I once professed on here the '15 V7 Stone I then owned was the best bike for me I have ever owned or driven.  I still stand by that statement.  For me.

The V9 looks like a sharp and wonderful machine.  Who knows.  But this go round I think I tend to favor a setup that has already proven to work well for me (V7).  And too, just speaking for me here, I think I would rather enjoy the tank range on the V7 than the limited extra ponies on the V9.

Your making the right decision for you.
Don't see many roof racks on '70 Dodge Superbee's..ha,ha
Motorcycles are so highly personal things, and you gave the mighty GRiSO
a good fight to make her work for you. Sometimes wish I'd gave my Stelvio the
same fighting chance.
The big naked roadster of mine will get a Dart Marlin for multi-day trips whether she
likes it or not!
You may miss hanging on tight with your knee's as she tries to pry the handlebar from your grip.

Sometimes its more fun to accelerate the big girl hard,
then to wait on a slow bike to spool up.

Don't test ride a Honda CB1100. I saw the prototype and was seduced. Heard it run and had to have it. After riding it she is an ever better bike. The only ding, and so far it's minor, she is not a twin. If she had a twin cylinder motor it would be perfect.

Had to lower the pegs and raise the seat; but those were minor tweaks. Tons of torque, very very easy to ride, loves the twisty bits - kinda like riding the motorcycle version of a Buick or Thunderbird. Unlike the Griso she does not induce hooligan speeds (however; if pushed, in the higher rpm range she shows a bit of Elvira  ).

The main reason I choose it over the V7, I fit the CB better. Still, the V7 was not that bad and I keep looking at her.

Back problems, their aggravating factors, and their solutions are all highly individual.  But as a general rule I would never recommend the Griso to someone with back problems.  Maybe if you invested $2500 in new suspension bits it would be ok.

Nobody remotely cares about this nor should you but I just decided to keep this amazing machine.  Too damn gorgeous and fantastic to cheapen further just to sell or trade.  If my main issue with the bike is that my bad back won't tour on it then instead of getting rid of this one or trying to twist it into a touring bike, then I think all it needs is a touring partner in the garage.   :boozing: :thumb:  I am, however, gonna try and run the Beetle map on it and add a fly screen, possibly the Dart Marlin.

Uf-dah.  I sold my Cali EV because of my back.  Feet forward is no way for me to ride.  Funny how ergonomics is such an individual issue.

Switching back and forth between those two is an experience for sure.  They aggravate completely different parts of my body, but each one aggravates something.  After a couple of hundred miles on the EVT my right wrist was killing me but my butt was fine.  The Griso seems to target the back side.

The real differences are the power of the right wrist and the perception of speed.  When I get behind that windshield on the EVT I immediately think that I'm running on one cylinder and not going anywhere; it takes a glance down to the speedo to realize that I'm doing 70mph.  The feeling of power on the G is intoxicating.

BP...I have to chuckle at the back and forth.  I was foster sitting your Griso's twin for a while for my friend...gave it back to him and just bought a 2004 Cali EV a few weeks ago...but now a friend of mine wants to buy the Cali, so I'm selling it at the end of the month.  I feel like my garage has a rotating door!  :)  Problem is I really like the Cali...so who knows, might find another one too!

Now if I could just find a nice Scura one day...I'd like to see if I'd like that bike...
