strange tail light
« on: April 17, 2016, 06:24:15 PM »
OK, I'm weird, you said it before and I accept that, but I am going to order one of these strange tail lights that paints a red laser line across the lane behind you.  I have had great success with similar lights on bicycles.  It seems the american driver is highly conditioned not to cross a line, and painting a line on the road to give you space just might work once in a great while..

What traffic ticket?  As far as I know there is no century code to prevent it.  LEO doesn't seem to mind the similar lights to either side of my bicycle.  This is just the first one I have seen that runs off 12V.  It will be interesting though.  Any LEO here feel free to chime in.

What happens if someone walks behind your stopped vehicle and looks directly at it?  Looks like a cop magnet.

It's pointed down on the ground.  If I already ran over them so they'r layin' in the road looking at a low power laser is prolly the least of their worries.  lol

I suspect that at they power level they would need to use, it will be nearly worthless in bright sunlight.

LEO's don't care if I ride wheelies all day long on my bicycle. Doesn't mean its okay to do so on my motorcycle.

Someone invented an even more stupid version of the get-back whip.  I didn't think that was possible.  Combine it with lane 'sharing' and you too can be the complete 'package'.

Yeah, but if they're already in your space they can't even see your rear tire, much less a line on the road.

Maybe instead of a line it could programmed for scrolling messages. Then you could  get local business's to pay you to ride around and advertise for them at intersections :thumb:

Could blind ya if the mount got loose.

Or attract those laser guided missles.

Other than that, I like it!

I have been out for @ 7 yrs., but as far as Kalifornia is concerned, I can't think of anything that would outside of the Vehicle Code.
Red light to the rear is good to go.
Veh. Code, at least 7 yrs. ago, didn't even have the word laser in it.
It isn't distracting, imho, so no problem there, ymmv.
Maybe, maybe, too many candle power ?  I dunno.

Anything to be seen is a good thing.

As far as being a magnet for drunks and drugged drivers, I dunno.
With 30 yrs. on the highway, I've been hit with all lights on, flashing rear lights on, just 4 ways on and no lights on.  :undecided:

Edit:  reading the product description on Amazon, it does appear to be the finest Chinese import, so maybe someone would be inclined to check if it was SAE or DOT approved, but since it isn't a required lighting device, shouldn't be a problem.

Keep me posted on how this works out for you.

Probably illegal in every state. Better look up the laws regarding the use of lasers. Forget the vehicle code, look up lasers in the penal code, the one that can get you arrested and prosecuted. With all the hooplah surrounding laser use I'd be very hesitant to stick that on a motorcycle.

Anyway, want to bet it attracts more people to drive closer to see what it is that staying out of your space? This isn't a bicycle along side the road or in a bike lane, you are in traffic on city and highway roads.

Neat idea but like any novelty, it seems like it would attract rather than repel.

Answer: good lights, high visibility riding gear.

What could go wrong? Mount comes loose, laser points into a car = prison.

Elaborate.  Please.

Who else will be concerned with my safety?

If I'm to busy to be concerned with my personal safety, is there someone out there to do it for me?

You're probably wrong.  Again...

No doubt you are offering to pay the legal fees, ticket fees and such for anyone putting something like this on the back of their Guzzi right?

Somehow you got bicycles and motorcycles mixed up. Yeah,, a laser on the back of a motorcycle. Such a great idea.

Peddles came from the bicycle world too along with spandex tights helmet mounted mirrors and playing cards held on with clothes pins to make the engine sound.
