Opinions? Unit Garage's BMW R1200R RETRO Kit
« on: April 22, 2016, 01:09:02 PM »
So one of my good buds just picked up an R1100R in pristine shape the other day.  Very nice bike I must say.  While I was perusing around the web, however, I came across this kit for an R1200R (2007-2013).   All cosmetic and bolt on parts, nothing mechanically enhanced or changed as I understand it.  Produced by an Italian designer, it ain't cheap but I wouldn't expect it to be.  Thoughts?  All yours for about $3800.

I know nothing about the kit (sorry), but that looks like it includes an entirely new tank?

Man, that looks great in white with those Krauser bags!

Not sure but I think that might actually be some kind of tank cover and not a tank itslef.

Some of the proportions look a little off to my eye.

BUT I LIKE IT!

My /5 had the 6 gal touring tank with rubber pads.  Reminds me of that.

Me too  I gotta admit it had me looking locally for a cheap R1200R I could somehow justify getting simply so I could obtain the kit, though the kit would cost nearly 3/4 of any R1200R I can find

Yeah, I think the large size of the tank cover is a combination of it having to be large because it's a tank cover and not an actualy tank; yet, I do think it is somewhat meant to be reminiscent of vintage Beemers with those larger tanks.

Its an Inbetweenie!

It is not as proportional as this.

and

It is not as cluttered looking as this...

It is in between.

But my biggest problem is that I dont have the Andy Cap and Hush Puppies to look right riding it.

Aside from the aesthetics, IT'S FAKE.

Is it fake or is it simply an aesthetic change?

I mean the seat is really a seat and the Krausers are really bags and side covers are really covers. As for the tank that's not without precedence today (Ducati, Harley, Honda, etc.).

The posted one is a bit "off" to me but I like parts of it hugely. The fact that for the cost - the tank merely represents covers rather than increased volume is a bummer. Also, deeply, and nicely, valancing the rear fender but not the front is a visual letdown.

For my part, these are the ones which really trip my trigger over there:

As an option for a cast-oo, unloved triple, I like this one a lot and it can be bought in only the parts one wants rather than the expensive kit.

And then this RNineT treatment looks nice too.

All in all - they have a hell of a line up if a guy's of a Teutonic bent.  http://www.unitgarage.com/  Me though, I still slouch towards the more languid stylings of the Italians.

As with cars, it continually surprises me how often my wife or I will comment admiringly on a vehicle and sum it up with: "looks like an Italian designed it".

Fits with clothing, cookware and sporting arms to boot.
