Extended rear brake lever, 97 EV?
« on: May 01, 2016, 01:57:06 AM »
Took the EV's out for a ride this afternoon.  Quick 220 mile round trip up to Winthrop, WA for coffee and a salad (yeah I know, supposed to be pie or something good...but...ummmm. ..I had to loosen up the elastic waist on the 'stich about a month ago).  I had forgotten how much I like my 97 EV.  However, I had also forgotten how much I hate the rear brake lever.  Awkward and uncomfortable to use.  Almost caused me to dump the bike coming down my steep dirt and rock driveway this evening.

Is there any replacement or such that will either extend it out an inch or three to the front or maybe even out to the side?????

Obligatory bike pic.  My 97 EV and Pete's 03 Cali EV.  Wells Dam picnic area, US 97, Lake Chelan, WA

Dave in Pa. crafted a brake pedal fro himself. Soon after that a guy marketed the advanced brake pedal, which went under the floor board and stuck up in front of the board. He passed away and they stopped making them. If you locate one for sale, buy it now, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars. They rarely come up but are a great improvement over that ghastly factory pedal.

I bought an '98 EV last summer that the PO moving the brake pedal forwards about and inch and half by adding a new pivot point. Still it is not much better. I guess you need to go farther forward. The other thing he did was to remove the little nub on the brake peddle. As I understand it that nub was for your heel to rest on if you were riding where you needed frequent braking, like on a very twist road. This bring me to shifting which I'm not crazy about too. Having to lift ones foot every time you shift. So if I have to do a lot of shifting I rest my heel at the pivot point, toes on the front make for easy down shifting.

I believe Moe makes forward controls so that might help some people.

Me I'm thinking resets or something were the pegs and pedals are underneath you.

I do love the bike still.

If you can score the lower frame rails that has pegs, along with the controls that go with them, the brake and shifter are much more user friendly.

I use an Advanced Brake Pedal on my Vintage. I love the extra room it frees up, but the pedal is very long and made of aluminum. It flexes a good bit, so I mostly use it as though it was just a rear brake. I've often toyed with the idea of crafting a version out of stainless steel. It would probably work a great deal better...

I had the advanced pedal.  The crashbar interfered with it and I couldn't get a full stroke on the pedal before it bottomed out on the bar or my toe caught the bar and couldn't continue the stroke.  As mentioned above, it was oddly made and flexed, further reducing the feel.  The oddest part of its construction were the bends in the pedal, which were made without radiusing or other stress relief.  It looked like a good panic stomp could break it.  I passed it along to my kid for his Jackal.

Kawasaki made a pedal that went under the floorboard of their KZ police bikes and presented the foot pad at the front of the running board.  (They had a matching shifter that also pretty much cleared the foot boards for more important things -- like feet).  It was a good design.  If someone adapted that to the guzzi they'd have something.
