Quota wrecked at Maryville TN, can someone assist?
« on: May 27, 2016, 10:19:05 AM »
The Quota was hit head on by out of control RC8 on the Dragon and got towed to Maryville TN. While the insurance is looking into If it is totalled or not, I need to get it out of the KTM guys garage. I'm in Nashville right now, but can come back to Maryville within 1 day.

Does anyone with trailer live in Maryville- Knoxville area, who could assist with towing it to their yard/garage? Or a motorcycle shop? This way I can get insurance adjuster to come and look at it. It will most likely be totalled.
Good news is that all parties are ok, just bruises and scratches.

Ouch!

I'm glad to hear that you are OK.

I've been wanting to get down and ride that road, but, this, and other similar stories have me thinking that there are plenty of other good roads to ride.

Huge thank to "toaster404", it appears that Corban from Powersportspro will pick up the Quota into his shop already today. After the insurance adjusters inspection we'll know if it will be ridden again or if somebody makes a nice aluminum ashtray out of it.

You are most welcome.  Let me know when you're back - I live just down the road from Corban's shop a few miles.

The Dragon certainly attracts some riders who shouldn't be on it.  Not usually because of their skill set or bike, but because of attitude, approach, and possibly other mental issues.  The "hype" has hearts all aflutter, and there's the "challenge" aspect.  Take all that away, and it is just another curvy mountain road. And still is on mid-week early mornings!  Wednesday mornings can be so calm that I used to bicycle over for breakfast.

Maps available at Smoky Mountain Harley Davidson show other nice routes.  441 over the Smokies is excellent.  The Cherohala Skyway is simply stunning, and has nice off-camber, decreasing radius turns to get the pulse up.  For calmer touring, some of the roads in the valley are beautiful.  And for twisties, the N. Georgia six gaps run is very nice and can get a good deal of terror rising with the barest hint of overcooking a corner.

A big disadvantage of most of these roads is that emergency medical care is not prompt.  I strongly suggest carrying a basic trauma kit and the knowledge of scene assessment, trauma evaluation and aid, and accident scene management.  Some of the "management" I've seen up on the Dragon was almost designed to create secondary crashes.

Other than hot rodding, I see several common errors in our hills.  Flatlanders do not take gravity push into account.  Some folks don't understand the importance of a late apex.  Brain fog sets in for many before roads like the Dragon get calmer (a rest is in order).  There's also apex creep in groups, where each subsequent rider hits his or her apex a little sooner, until the last one finds the yellow line and possibly oncoming traffic.  There's also a good deal of just pain assholeness that is difficult to remain calm over.

I stand ready to assist anyone coming to this area with information and more.

Very glad no injuries from this event, and hope the bike will be salvaged.

'There's also a good deal of just pain assholeness that is difficult to remain calm over.'

Amen, brother...I can't tell you how many times and places we enjoyed in the '60's-'70s-80s with complete solace and peace until the 'You've got to FIGHT for your right to PARTYYYY!' crowd took over and brought the heat down on getting out in nature and enjoying oneself with (somtimes) herbal and chemical enhancement involved....I spent the 70's-80's in SW Missouri and I am amazed these days how many old haunts/roads/swimming holes are off-limits now...sad to see a Quota get destroyed just because someone couldn't restrain themselves...
