Norge luggage liner questions
« on: May 31, 2016, 10:46:28 AM »
I was hoping for some info on luggage liners. In my research on the forum I read that the  factory liners aren't correct size and too rigid. I ran across bagsforbikes.com however they are no longer in business. I contacted Kathysjourneydesign s.com and ironically they have just obtained the templates from bagsforbikes to start making liners for the Norge. Since Kathys just obtained templates they have no information about different year models. So on to my questions...Are all year model Norge side bags the same size or did they change?
Also, I'm planning a trip to Italy and will be renting a 2015 BMW R1200RT ...Does anyone know how well the Norge Liner may fit the RT side bag?
Thanks for any advice!

Good to hear that someone took over the business.  Thanks for the info. It appears that the Moto Guzzi products haven't been listed as of today.

A couple years ago I bought a set of Norge liner bags from a friend in Italy.  He has a business making inner liners for all kinds of bikes and all models.

You may find this a good option to look at as well...I've been using them now consistently for 2.5 years and they are still holding up wonderfully, like new.

http://www.motorbike-passion.eu/en/inner-bags-motoguzzi.html

If you're interested in these, feel free to use me a referral if you talk to Alberto (owner of Motorbike Passion)...he does send from Europe to the U.S. and with a favorable Euro rate, these are well priced.  If there are a bunch of folks who want to order, he'd even do a group shipment and save on freight...

I have the stock inner bags for my 2014 Norge. They are bit stiff and not quite the right size, but they do work. You just have to jam them into the panniers, sometimes with a bit of force (especially the left side as that pannier is little smaller than the right pannier).

Really, the Norge panniers are so fiddly anyway, what is a bit more fiddling to use the stock inner bags? (My panniers require two or three hands to open, and the seals are all messed up and deformed from using the bags, oh, perhaps a dozen times.)

That sounds a bit more troublesome Jeff than it should be.

The inner liners I have mentioned above are soft, fit very easily in the panniers and do a great job organizing items.

The Panniers themselves are super easy to manage, one flip on the side, turn the key and lift the handle and voila they are open - perhaps it's a question of coordinated pushing/pulling steps to ensure ease of use....not sure.

So, I guess (per OP questions) all model years (v1 and v2) have the same side bag dimensions? I have a "Newark"  2015, and have thought about this too.

I'd be in for some liners but not the OEM at 300 plus.

Back in the early days of the Norge, someone here found a great bag sold at Target that fit perfectly! I still have mine from 2007 and many trips.

I wish my panniers were easier to use, but all four of them (on two different Norges) have been so difficult to use (primarily because of the rubbish seals) that I usually just give up and use my bulbous MG top case.

The other day, just for fun, I looked at some new BMWs. Now, BMW has got panniers figured out! (So, too, Harley Davidson.)

I think I just need to remove the deformed rubber seals and use plastic garbage bags to keep things dry...

Still, one of my rear latches is a bit dodgy (a fragile plastic locating pin snapped off at the very beginning). The latch still works, but it takes some fiddling...

Looks like a well made bag. I purchased a liner for the Norge that was made for some Japanese bike and they lasted for a season or two and then the zippers broke, so I tossed them out as they weren't worth fixing, but these look pretty good. thanks.

I bought a set of these from eBay out of the UK.  Kind of an impulse purchase but they seem well made, fit well and should my needs just fine.  About $85 including shipping so I thought they were worth a gamble.

I'd seen those over here too but wondered about the quality.

From your response it sounds like they're OK but are they made from water proof/resistant fabric?

The red suspender solution is to buy some cheeeeep school back packs; almost all have a moisture barrier and a set can be had for $20 +/-. Cut all the straps off but the top handle and they are actually quite handy. Of course, the fashion police will arrest you on sight!!!

I like the backpack idea!

Another option: flexible, waterproof duffle bags from REI. Just stuff them in there!

I am actually going to look into that. I am tired of wrestling with my fiddly panniers. The struggle is due to the deformed seals. If I were to remove the seals (they pop out easily), water would get into the panniers, but that would not matter if I had waterproof duffle bags inside.

I always have to chuckle at the red suspender parsimonious behavior and excessive stinginess ( and I mean this in good humour).

Folks who buy Guzzis seem to do so because they enjoy the elegant and functional Italian style, the panache, the uniqueness of the bike, but will suddently balk at buying an accessory that has been made specifically for the bike which keep it functioning and looking good.  Why the anomaly?

Buy a beautiful bike and put a garbage bag in it...that's like going to deciding to cook filet mignon and putting BBQ sauce on it...or trying to dance Tango in a pair of hiking boots...they just don't go together...

Shit...why not just put a couple of large Ziploc bags in their and attach them with some gorilla tape to the inside of the pannier...that will work too!

I removed my rubber seals this morning when I got to work. Amazing! The panniers now open and close so easily!

Who cares about a bit of water getting into them? I think I will drill a couple of drain holes in the bottom of each one and stuff a couple of garbage bags inside just in case I might need them.

And no, I am not parsimonious. I spend money quite liberally. Just ask my wife!

Ok...Jeff...I want to see those garbage bags in John Day in a few weeks time.

I'll bring along a couple of extra large Ziplocs and the Gorilla Tape to "upgrade" your setup!

...and if you like, you can check out the bag liners I've got...shoot, I might even call up my friend in Italy and ask him for a group discount for you Norge riders!

You have to use the clear garbage bags that are used for cleaning up construction sites.  Thicker and you can see your stuff. :thumb:
