Called and talked to the owner...
said roller fix was completed by guzzi dealer in Jacksonville...
He said he has the paperwork as proof.

If you think about it, it's still not bad. I remember saying that once or twice when any given 1000S was a couple of years old and their prices hardly when down from new, unless you lucked into one!

Somebody in Houston buy this bike so I can be your pal and then we can swap bikes and.  Crap, if it was local, I would be temped to pull out my checkbook if it rolls as advertised.  Rode a Griso once.  Damn impressive bikes.  Had a bit of issue with forward kickstand.  Heavy things, but once moving, yeah, wow.

Even though the Griso is probably way more motorcycle than is good for me, if I wasn't in the middle of spending  too much $$ on a new custom bicycle, I'd be lining up a shipper now. 

The more I think about it, the more I think - when am I ever going to see a well-sorted, barely-used Tenni Griso come up for sale again?  Knowing that the rollerization is done on it already, I have to take back my initial comment about it being priced too dear.  I hope he gets close to what he's asking, I'll have to be content with my V7 for now.  Luckily, I love it.

so now i just got a text from the owner that the jacksonville dealer that serviced the bike told him that it did have the roller issue and that it only effected 2009-2011 models...
is ther a vin number series that had the problem?
or is there a vin number where it had the good rollers?
i am strongly considering this bike, but need to be certain on the roller issue.

Well now that sounds like a sweet offer Dusty...you'd be the first to see this infamous villa, I keep thinking one day Greg is going to host a Houston Guzzi Monster Garage at the new digs...you know, Guzzis, Italian fizzy drinks, pasta and steaks, a little rock and roll music, dancing girls etc...

If it is low mileage and has been rollerised and the sump cleaned properly you are probably OK but no cast iron guarantees. This is the sad and uncomfortable truth. Anybody who tells you that the issue only affected *Some* years and models and that theirs, miraculously, doesn't fit into that group is either misinformed or dishonest.

Do you really think a 2000 mile bike would have significant shavings in the sump already?

Sorry, I was confusing this with Luap's Stelvio thread.

No, at 2,000 miles it is unlikely there will be DLC missing but if you look at them in strong sunlight from an oblique angle you will be able to see the difference in the surface texture and appearance of the coating that presages the delamination of the coating.

Regardless of this the fact is it isn't a matter of if it will fail, simply when. The rapidity of total failure varies greatly but short runs, damp climates and infrequent use are early killers and I suspect certain engine speeds are also a contributory factor. One thing that it's NOT a factor is oil delivery, there is plenty and it gets everywhere it should. Using a full ester synthetic is important but not really in relation to the tappet failure issue.

If this bike hasn't been rollerised knock two grand off the asking price or walk away. There are plenty more fish in the sea.

We need some way of determining the engine is rollerized, genuine fix.  Then...you might be surprised.

I think the Tenni Griso is perhaps the most beautiful modern Guzzi ever made...

Oh, another thing. It may well be that the current owner believes it's been rollerised but it may well in fact have just had the earlier recall swap from cast iron to DLC coated forged steel tappets. This is, unfortunately, NOT a satisfactory fix but it may be believed with good faith by the current owner that it has been rollerised.

As stated the only way to tell for sure is to look. I'll post up pics in a few minutes so you can tell the difference.

Oh, and here are a couple of pics of damage at 14,000Km. These were off a 1200 Sport which, for some reason, seem to be harder on their tappets than other models. Usually they are worse than this by this stage.



Note the tappet in the bottom left. If you only glance casually it would look OK but I got the light on it just right and you can see the decay. The damage to the other three is obvious.

And another pic from a different angle. I fear that some shops would see damage such as this and might just put it down to 'Normal wear and tear'. It Isn't.

Reminds me of the old ARDU (Aircraft Research Development Unit) who were still running C-47's in the late 90's commonly known as Dakota Airlines, We Get There.... Eventually. 50 plus year old aircraft (at the time) tended to have a few breakdowns.
