I finally rode up and got the new grips from the good folks at
TheMotoCycleShop in Watertown, SD. It is noce living in a state that has a dealer even if the dealer is a couple hundred miles away. The grips they gave me are actually Stelvio grips but cross to the same numbers for the Norge grips. I had a choise of $120 for one grip or $140 for the whole kit. Guess what I chose?
i am always amazed at how the Guzzi is assembled in layers and I always seem to be working on the bottom layer so I have to take off five or six layers of stuff to get to what I have to work on. Guido was a sadist. to be able to get to the heated grip connectors I had to raise the tank. to raise the tank I had to remove the instrument cluster deck. To do that I had to take out the side fairing fasteners. Then to get the old cables out and route the new ones in I had to take out the steering head cluster.
The steering head cluster was the only real tricky part. To do that without completely removing the fairing I had to dig up a mini 1/4" drive ratchet I have so I could get the retainer screws out. That made the job a lot easier.
The connectors are buried dead center under the tank. I don't know if you will be able to see them in these pictures.
This job took me way too long because I was going slow so not to break anything just before the MN rally.
The new grips are way more grippy than the originals, and the throttle grip cam starts out milder and ends up more aggressive than the original. I kind of like it.
Another surprise was that the left grip is screwed to the bar with two sheet metal screws. To get to them you have to roll back the grip rummer where you see indents at the inner guard.
