Another flat rear tire on the Norge.

I've lost count; maybe 6-7 rear tire flats on this bike. Never have had anything close to this with another bike. Yesterday wife and I took 100 mile ride on back roads in Northern Kentucky. As usual, we ended the ride with a stop (and a beer) at Rabbit Hash, a local MC gathering spot. As we were leaving the Hash, I noticed that the rear tire was completely flat. I found a small hole in the middle of the tread and plugged it using the dynaplug kit I had in the topcase. However, I had not brought along my pump. Fortunately, a rider on a Ninja 1000 volunteered the use of his pump. With his pump, we could only get the pressure to about 25 PSI. I nursed the bike home; about 20 mile ride, mainly on back roads. All was OK until I got very close to home; could tell tire was losing air; went completely flat about one block from home.

Must just be coincidence, but I have not had good luck with this bike wrt rear tires. Oh well, time for another new one.

Had the same thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago, except I was in the middle of nowhere --- Fortunately I also had a plug kit and a pitiful electric air compressor.  Was able to get the tire up to 20 psi, enough to get down the road a few miles to a gas station and air it up the rest of the way.  The plug fix lasted the 400 miles or so home fortunately.  I'll be taking that plug kit with me from now on !

I remember reading somewhere that the front tire kicks stuff up and then the rear tire gets the puncture. The fix was to put a type of mud flap in front of the rear tire to kind of block the "stuff" from the rear tire. Old inner tube hanging from the front of the swingarm or??? Just my 2 cents.....

The original Norge flat tire guy no longer posts here for whatever reason, but a flat on a Norge is called a "Hagan." He had several in one summer.  There must be something about Norges..

I had a late model 911 that regularly did this. Because of the top speed of 170+, most shops would only sell you a new rear tire....at $600+.

Thanks to the posts here, I've got a plug kit & compressor in the bags now.  Thankfully, haven't had to use them.

This was the first time that I didn't find a nail or screw penetrating the tire; just found a little gash. The tire was pretty worn; was going to replace it soon anyway.

Don't know if this will help anybody, but a tale to tell -

My Eldorado got a series of mysterious flats, tiny puncture in the tube and no evident culprit in the tire.

The third time we went over the tire visually with extreme predjudice, and discovered what appeared to be a 1/4" long finishing nail about .040 around, and it was positioned diagonally through the tread.

It was so tiny that the entire thing could retreat into the tire tread and not be visible from inside or outside, but while running at speed it would eventually work it's way out, penetrate the tube, then retreat back into the tread.

Oddly enough I've never had a flat on my Norge in 110,000 miles - but maybe that's because I always have a patch kit and compressor in the left pannier!

During the first 12,000 miles on by 2011 Norge I had three rears and one front. My T-3 has had two since 1979.

I put one of these on my Norge, as well as the factory rear fender extension (usually marked as being for the Breva).

Can be ordered in the US from eBay sources as well as through some online accessory stores; I believe Twisted Throttle may have them, as may some of our favorites like AF1, et al.

 Seems maybe we have been mislead or simply misunderstood the definition of Norge . Some research indicates it means "he with flat" in a Western Plains Indian dialect

What kind of tires are you running?  All 6-7 flats with the same type of tire?  Riding thru construction zones perhaps?  All nails and punctures or unexplainable flats?

All but one flat caused by a nail or screw that was still imbedded in tire when the tire went flat. I do live in an area with quite a lot of new housing construction.

Variety of tires: last one Angel GT, mainly PR2's and PR3's.

Got it...that's a pity...lots of road hazards then unfortunately.  Good to hear it's not the tires though - I'll try not to jinx myself, but I've had no flats on my Norge ever, although I do carry a patch and plug kit and compressor.  Hopefully the construction wraps up and no more flats eventually!

That will do it, if the tread is low you have a better chance of getting a flat.

As a matter of fact, I have ridden this bike many more miles than I have ridden any of the other few dozen bikes I have owned over the past 51 years of riding. But still....6 or 7 flats is a lot. It is a keeper; perhaps my favorite bike of all time.

i knew i shouldnt have read this thread - got a puncture on my Norge rear tyre last night coming home.  heard a terrible noise from the bike as if somethings was being ground up, quickly stopped and on checking found a screw sticking half inch out of the rear tire - the screw had mangled up the rear hugger on the way round.   rolled the bike back on the screw to seat it and then nursed it home for  a mile, screw out and plug in and sorted - need a new hugger now so and expensive flat
