I do not understand why the rider is so casual about changing lanes when there's a big yellow thing in front of him...

What I find amazing is that none of the vehicles that swerved to avoid the spinning sliding motorcycle stopped to help.

It appears that he did not brake until the big yellow thing came all the way loose. There was almost three seconds between it coming noticeably loose and actually falling onto the road. Could have done a lot of braking in that time.

Yeah I identified that twinkie as a threat in the very first frame of the video. No way I'd have been behind that any longer than to change lanes. Either he's inexperienced or inattentive-he had a lot of options he didn't exercise.
Something wistful and amusing, yet poignant.

A clear case of a tardy reaction to a dangerous and threatening situation combined with target fixation. He took way to long to start braking and when he took avoiding action he actually rode into the object. He would have been fine if he had braked a bit harder (which gives you more time to evaluate the path of the object) and stayed in the lane he was in. Changing lanes just added another risk factor into the equation. Note the riding gear...shorts!!
Could well have been target fixation though.

Right.  It looked like once it was rolling down the road he thought he'd just change lanes and avoid it, but it was way too unpredictable to try that.  I'm with you, if I had seen that ahead of me, I would have changed lanes immediately, and been ready to change again to the right lane if necessary, even it it appeared to be secure.

WCCO news story also said He only had his license for 2 weeks. So yes, after viewing the video several times it appears his reaction was slow and quicker braking and swerving to the left were the better options. But in real time something like that happens so fast. He said that he planned on riding again. So hopefully he learns better accident avoidance and wears more gear. And boat guy needs to be charged with something. Rider is lucky to not have been killed or seriously injured.

Added to his inexperience may have been a sense of disbelief. A refusal of the mind to accept what was happening and to react to it.  It happens.

Actually, if you look at the end of the video at least three cars are stopping/ed on the shoulder, two dark ones and the last white one that took to the shoulder to miss the spinning bike.  Plus it looks like the car with the video camera also stopped.

Had a bumper fly off a car in front of me a few years back on the freeway. I was able to avoid the bloody thing on a 850 lb cruiser. My general rule of thumb is either stay in the right lane and go slower than traffic or run about 10 mph over traffic. Avoid those boats and roof racks that so many people tie down things with bungle cords. I hate being next to semi trucks too as I don't want to experience one of them truck blow-outs.

among all the other mistakes, he did not stand up on the pegs when it became obvious he was going to hit that thing. tells me he was shut down, not believing what was happening. this should teach him at least one place to look for hazards.

there is more to the story, video wise.. Linda L who posted it was approached by some agency and tricked into signing something that gave them the rights to the video!
a manager at WCCO  found this out when they called and threatened lawsuit if a fee to air the video was not paid.. they got $100. each time it was broadcast..
said manage spoke to Linda L and informed her that she no longer owned the video rights and also informed her the contract was to pay her $700. she was unaware.. but suckered..
now the firm can threaten a lawsuit and settle for payment by any broadcaster who want to use it, crazy I know since it's free to view on youtube.. but CBS has a whole floor of lawyers in NYC and they advise to pay the fee instead of the usual credit graphic applied.
Did you notice the ad before you can watch it on YT? luckily you can "skip ad in 3 seconds" but they probably still make some good revenue from that since it's had 1.4 Million views as of now.. what a score!

Linda L said she got the dash cam in order to film a bear they have in the driveway.. and didn't even know it was recording the bike crash at the time.. turns out her camera is on as soon as the car starts..

still no citation to the driver who lost the load but he is co-operating with law enforcement.

In being a three lane one way busy highway, there is certainty a reluctance to just to whip it to the adjacent lane in an instant.
