Run for Higher Ground - In Search of Cooler Air in CO.
« on: July 04, 2016, 05:29:44 AM »
Pictures from a week in the Rockies on the Norge, excellent scenery and really fine roads for working on those chicken strips.
Rode from Houston to Trinidad, Salida, Basalt, The Springs and back home.  It was a fine escape from the summer heat here on the Gulf Coast.  Camped half the time, stayed 2 nights in the Simple Hostel in Salida with backpackers doing the CDT (Continental Divide Trail) and enjoyed hearing their stories.  True adventurers they are.

Paul,
I got back home last Tuesday.  And stumbled into work on Wednesday.     Childress TX. is halfway there from H-Town.  The Econo-lodge will rent you a nice room for $70.  Use the internet reservation system.  I took a week off from work plus 2 days to ride home after attending the Pikes Peak Hill Climb on 6/26.  The Electric cars and motorcycles there were impressive.

Great trip to some of my favorite places Jim

Looks like I was just a few days behind you as we came back from John Day Friday evening, and had come from Wyoming thru Dillon, Leadville, Buena Vista, Salida (even stopped in front of that hostel after grabbing a bite for breakfast) and also stayed in Childress (Red Roof Inn).  Pikes peak is a fun ride up as well...the races must have been impressive...was Sebastian Loeb there this year too?

I am keeping it cool.  This was the road to Mt Evans a couple of days ago.

Except for the mini Grand Canyon part it looked surprisingly a lot like the South island of New Zealand.

Jim,
We spent last Monday at my brothers in Salida. Check out www.carpentrybyhand .com. He's lived in Craig, Minturn, Leadville and now Salida. Makes it nice to visit and make day trips from his place until he runs me off for eating too much.
I'd like to live there, but I couldn't afford a garage in that town.

I like Minturn...one of the most beautiful bridges in Colorado in my view from down below looking back up, I found a wonderful blue Defender 110 there on my last trip...wish I could have taken it home!

Great roads all around there no doubt...not sure I could live in Leadville...10K elevation is way too high for me for permanent living!

Sebastion Loeb was not in the race.  I saw the Polaris 156 bike go by and heard Don Canets name so I assume it was him.

Ken,  I rode past the Chaffee Co. fairgrounds and thought "hey that's the place Tex held the rally. I never made it, but really wanted to".  Right across the street is Elevation Brewing which I was told was the best micro brewery in the valley.  Have to go back to verify that claim.

Sorry I missed you guys, did not see another Guzzi the entire trip.  Did have a number of enthusiasts complement the Norge or express envy for the chance to get away and travel by bike.

It is a fine thing.   :thumb:

Salida.  Nice place.  I attended my first Guzzi Rally there.  A shame that we haven't had a rally there since.

Of course bad timing on my part for missing all of Rocker's Colorado NARs.

Got my next Colorado trip planned.  Ms. LD and Princess #1 also attending for a week.  Second week by myself.  Need to reserve the BMW rental, this time I want to do the Durango-Silverton run.  Another possible is east to Bayfield, up to Vallecito and over to east Animas road, etc.
Wildcat Canyon road is another favorite.  Hope the chip sealing is done on 550.
