V7 Euro Sidestands - Heads Up
« on: July 11, 2016, 06:19:43 AM »
For those who don't know the standard US sidestand for the V7 series will foul the centerstand while the EU sidestand allows you to retract it before or after the centerstand is deployed without interfering with the centerstand in any way. As such the EU sidestand can be a popular V7 accessory.

I believe that yesterday I accidentally discovered that there are TWO DIFFERENT EU sidestands floating around and anyone who is purchasing one might want to be aware of the differences.

Yesterday I went to move Jay's V7 Special and when I put it back on the Euro Sidestand it literally FREAKED ME OUT because I thought it was going to fall over. I realized that's because my brain is programmed to the lean angle on my V7 (having had the EU sidestand on it for a few years now).

A quick investigation showed me that Jay's V7 Special leans over much further because his EU sidestand is about a INCH or so SHORTER than mine.

Ironically it makes his bike feel heavier when coming off the sidestand, so much so that I think his wife doesn't want to try and ride it, while mine feels so light that might not be a problem.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure the differences are as follows:

My paperwork says: B063086

Which is what the Harper's website says and shows:

https://www.harpermoto.com/lateral-stand-b063086.html

That's where I got it.

I THINK Jay ordered HIS from AF1 because it was cheaper by about $50.

https://www.af1racing.com/store/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=53463

Their website lists the same part #, but in parentheses with the term "EX" - I'm guessing they mean former part number, and the "new" cheaper part # is 2B001033

It's funny, but the photo they use is obviously still the one on my bike, not the one that I think they sell.

Now if you google search that second part # the FIRST two images you get are MY sidestand and then JAY'S sidestand:

https://www.google.com/search?q=2B001033&biw=1391&bih=643&tbm=isch&imgil=FAID-ytIzmTz1M%253A%253BoCuEPhqiMoINNM%253Bhttps%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.af1racing.com%25252Fstore%25252FScripts%25252FprodView.asp%25253Fidproduct%2525253D53463&source=iu&pf=m&fir=FAID-ytIzmTz1M%253A%252CoCuEPhqiMoINNM%252C_&usg=__3ZmgMqrJl0goAed4mm9seHQrzAI%3D&ved=0ahUKEwi2p5fJouvNAhXCdh4KHaFOASgQyjcIRw&ei=_H2DV7a5HcLteaGdhcAC#imgrc=FAID-ytIzmTz1M%3A

My stand:

Jay's stand:

Anyway, I mention this in case some purchasers might prefer one over the other for more or less lean angle on the sidestand.

As mentioned yesterday, mine is identical to Jay's (AF1).  That's why putting his on the stand felt normal.

Given you needed to modify your center stand when you got it, I suspect you got the earlier version of both, or ones designed for another smallblock model?

Embrace your "longer" stand.  As an Irishman, you don't get that very often.

I got the centerstand and kept the American side stand.  Yes, I've got deploy or retract it when using the centerstand.
Just another quirk.

Well, it's possible that a part supplier was changed and the later one (cheaper one) from AF1 is all that is available now.

But I find it interesting that Harper's OEM Parts lookup gives the earlier part number (not later):

http://www.harpermoto.com/parts-by-motorcycle/2010-2020-moto-guzzis/v7-special-stone-750-2012-2013/lateral-stand-en-v7-special-stone-750-2012-2013.html

and that it is listed as being compatible with all 2012-14 smallblock models.

It's also the part number that's listed in the German language 2012-13 V7 Special/Stone parts book.

So I'm sure it was the correct and intended stand, as least at some point.

Actually, I much prefer it as I think Jay's bike leans over too far for my taste.

I do too, enough that I may be the B063086.

My wife finds the V7 "too heavy" to stand up off the side stand.    The longer side stand will make that easier for her.

EDIT: I just checked the side stand on my V7 Racer.   It is the longer B063086.     I never really noticed the increased effort to stand up the V7 Special vs. the Racer, likely due to the clipons on the Racer.    I DID notice the difference standing up Kev's bike in his garage yesterday.

I think I'll at least be swapping side stands between my two V7's for my wife to try out the V7S.

The shorter version may be a good option for the few here that have lowered their V7's. I don't remember who lowered theirs, or if they're even still on the board here.

Doesn't the US require MORE of a lean angle?  Maybe the Euro stands were changed to comply?

Or do I have that backwards...
