Shifter bushings for California's

Hi to all.  my 03 Cali EV shifter linkage is getting sloppy, understandable with 110,000 plus miles,  and I seem to remember a conversation around a campfire somewhere about a plan to fabricate a set of the required bushings.  I would appreciate a lead on buying a set if they are available.   Thanks,

Lee Bruns makes the bushings and is a member on this board.

Ace Hardware will have drawers full of bronze bushings of different sizes; you'll need to trim the length as required.  At least, for my Cal2, I was able to find exactly what I needed.


edit to add: I got in the habit of removing the levers at every tire change and giving the bushings a good coating of lubricant.

Lee was last active on this board on the 19th. Do a search of members and his name will show. Click on the envelope & send him an email. I got a pair of bushings for $10 years ago.

If they're the same as my 95 Cali had then they're commonly known as Glacier Bearings after the original manufacturer. AKA Dry Cylindrical Wrapped Bush according to the British Standard (BS3547  )

Fold the old ones in on themselves to get them out and press the new ones in using a suitable bolt washer and nut as per normal bodge-it practice

That being said, it didn't make a lot of difference to mine so presumably the spindle was worn or too small to start - I suspected the latter as there was no visible wear on the spindle

I bought the white plastic ones and  do not recommend them as a lot of reaming  on the inner part was necessary for them to fit      http://www.mgcycle.com/images/atrex/18252050.jpg

The originals on my '96 were black plastic that needed replacement at about 40,000 miles. Lees bronze bearings are still in there 100,000 miles later. They are a bit undersized and need honing using an emery cloth with a drill. Grease em once a year & they'll last forever.

Lee's bushings are great, had em for many years, really smooth out and tighten out the whole shifting mechanism.   I thought everyone used them....
