Broke new Gilardoni oil ring
« on: August 07, 2016, 06:42:59 PM »
I was installing a brand new Gilardoni cylinder set on my Eldorado engine and broke the oil ring!
Do I have to buy a whole set of rings or can I just buy the oil ring (bottom ring with spring)?
If I have to buy the whole set, can anyone recommend which set? Can't seem to find the 850 Gilardoni rings only.  Need by Friday if possibles.
Also, I got the translated instructions off of Greg Bender's site.  Is that best I can do? No YouTube or clear instructions with step by step pictures?!
 Thanks for any advice!

Check with Harper's and MG Cycle - maybe one of them has "loose rings" so you won't have to buy a full set.

Which set of rings? Those for Gilardoni pistons of course.

Ring broken by hand or with an official ring installation tool?

I bought the tool (cheap) just before installing the Ghilardoni jugs on the 850-T3. Felt a lot more comfortable and confident  using that simple device.

Do you mean the ring expander to put them on the pistons, or the ring compressor to get the pistons and rings in the cylinders?

I was referring to the expander to install the ring over the piston.
Never had any problems getting ringed pistons into bores.
Most bores I worked with had a lead chamfer at the bottom of the bore.
Finger pressure with thought and care and the pistons slid in without event.

I put the ring on & then remembered I hadn't checked the ring end gap. So foolishly tried to remove it without a tool. Snap. Won't try that again!

Perhaps, not by Friday, but they will sell you a single ring.  Call the fine folks at Hastings Piston Rings.  +1 269 945 2491

One of the lovely Ladies in Customer Service will want to know the bore, ring groove depth and height, and what you are looking for.  They've been at this game for over 100 years, and in today's blister pack, shrink wrap world, they are happy to sell you a single ring.  Might even put it on an airplane for you!
