Wisconsin rally bike fail turns into win
« on: August 08, 2016, 12:10:46 AM »
So this is only my 2nd rally ever (first was Elkader, IA 2 weeks ago).  Friday morning I packed up the '99 EV and took the long way to Lake Joy. Arrived about 1:30 and set up my tent and changed out of riding togs.  Strolled down to the pavillion where the main group was.  Realized about 3pm I didn't have my tobacco, and went back to campsite.  Uh-oh.  Left the key (headlight) on.

Next day bike started ok and I went on the poker run.  Got to the first site and got off to read the sign.  Bike would not start.  Clikety clik clik...Luckily the parking lot had a gradual downhill slope, so I was able to bump start it and ride back to Lake Joy.  Parked it and tried to start it...Clikety clik. Better ask for some help.

John with the WMGR was so helpful, he had a VOM and charger, and even told me if it was real bad he would trailer me and my bike back to Iowa.  Others helped too, but my memory is not good so I don't have their names (sorry).  I was so overwhelmed with the friendly helpful peoples.  Big thanks to Bill from Madison also who helped me with his know-how.  The owner of the campground even gave me a gallon of gas (he wouldn't take any money) so I could ride home without stopping for fuel (and maybe not get the bike started again).

So although I didn't get to do much local riding in the very pretty Wisconsin countryside, I had a great time.  Best guess is the battery has a bad cell, will be replacing very soon.  I couldn't get over how generous and helpful everyone was, cause I was pretty nervous about not getting home at first.  Met and chatted with many friendly folks and saw some very cool bikes.  Oh year, and beer truck with 4 or 6 craft beers at all times, plus delicious Wisconsin cheeses.

Rode it home today no problems.  Wonderful time and am looking forward to my next MG rally.

Tim

They treat you good for the first 20 or so, and then you're on your own.

NO.

Good that it turned out so well.  Sometimes rides are just jinxed.  Sometimes you break even, sometimes you win, and sometimes it comes together with elements of all.  I've found the tech support at rallies to be plentiful and expert.  I try to give as good as I get.

you might want to test the battery before replacing..  from my memory, these bikes won't run without a good battery for the distance you just rode.
