Ortlieb owners please chime in
« on: August 10, 2016, 11:27:42 AM »
I've got a pair of Ortlieb panniers/saddlebags that took the brunt of a slide earlier this year. I was gonna replace them when I realized i could probably seal them back up if I could come across the right material. They sell have sold a patch kit, but I can't find one in stock ANYWHERE.

The glue I'm not worried about, as far as finding a comparable retail product, but what about that material?

Any suggestions?

I have several Ortlieb waterproof bags that have done yeoman service over the years.

I note that Ortlieb (via their web site ortlieb.com) sells repair kits for their bags that includes a piece of the proper fabric along with a transparent sealer made for their bags.

Yep, see that, but cannot for the life of me figure out how to order from the site. I checked with literally dozens of distributors and can't find it in stock, with several stating that it's no longer available.

That's awfully frustrating when people don't update their sites ....

I don't know how important it is to have the right material; my approach would be some material from a heavy-duty canvas air mattress and some "Seal-All", my favorite adhesive waterproof fuel-proof sealant ...

Go buy one of their "sinks" to cut up for a patch. Also known as a "folding bowl". I've been abusing one of those for years on backpacking and canoe trips. Touch as nails, and if not the same, very similar material to the panniers. The green colour will give them some 'character'.

By the way, Touratech is the sole distributer of Ortlieb bags in the US now - using their own brand name. Tried a "chat" session to ask them = no reply.

From GiantLoop, their kit, while more expensive, looks more extensive.

PM me your mailing address & I'll drop a piece of patch material in the mail for you. Black or yellow?

Forgot to ask how much you need. I have a few of the squares that are in the kit.

If you need more than a small patch, call up Seattle Fabrics.

http://www.seattlefabrics.com/products.html

They probably have it. Or something that will work just as well.  Great people to deal with.

I appreciate the suggestions. Revisiting this bag with the eyes of a repairman, I realized there was more damage than i recalled. Still I'm gonna try and patch it up (Guzzi content)

dee g, I'm giving the 42 oz fabric from Seattle a try, it'll be plenty...which none of the patch kits would have managed. Seems it'll be a week or two before arrival, which is fine because I've got a trip, sans bike, planned next week. Doesn't seem right that it'll cost more in materials and labor to fix a set of soft bags than it cost Chuck to fix the tranny on the Scura....

Again, I appreciate the suggestions and offers.

Cheers.

I got the patch kit from either Aerostich or BestRest quite a while ago, but a rear tyre blow out did more damage to one of the panniers than the patch kit could fix when I laid it down. An auto trimmer replaced the whole panel with the same material and it's done sterling service ever since.

Perhaps a bit late for the OP, but I just got my BestRest newsletter, and they still advertise the patch kits ...
