Man, that's a rambunctious process!   You wouldn't think that any combustion chamber and nozzle system would survive that sort of thing - it would all be burned up.   On the other hand, the times I watched Fay having a baby, I would never have guessed that a woman would possibly survive that process had I not seen it, so maybe my instincts on the subject of mass ejection aren't very good.

Wonder what kind of EPA emissions permit they have to get for that?   When we were at the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center looking at the engines for the Saturn 5, and realizing that they burned THREE TONS OF FUEL PER SECOND, I was looking at and tracing the pump inputs and outputs trying to imagine 1000 gallons of liquid fuel going through them every second ....

Amazing technology.

I believe all liquid fueled engines are run before they are put in the rocket. A buddy worked for NASA on some of the test stands. He had some pretty cool vids. Last I heard from him, he was running the Russian motors NASA had bought and were refurbing them for use.

The thing that amazes me is that they wrap the liquid fuel feed pipes around the rocket nozzle to

a) warm the fuel up
b) cool the nozzle to stop it melting

Can you imagine wrapping the fuel pipe around the header on the bike

I'm sure it would end in tears  :thumb:

This is IMHO a really good video showing a Saturn V launch and a commentary by a NASA engineer
