Is that why the aluminum bats came into being? I never followed baseball. The NCAA went with them. Must have been for the safety factor.
Nothing sounds more lame than the *twink* of an aluminum bat of a hardball.
Some aluminium bats are a danger to pitchers due to the ball rocketing off the bat at a high velocity. They have found a way to prevent metal bats from doing it, but they have to police it.Not sure how threads like this end up on a Guzzi forum anyway.
Cost and the dearth of Ash . And with a mighty TINK of the bat , Oscario McPherson wins the 7th game of the 2066 World Series for the Belfast 55'ers . Yeah , somehow that just sounds wrong Dusty

Tuart you want tuart! It's a right royal sod to try and machine though I don't think the bat manufacturers will like it much, might be a tad heavy too!
Tuart= Eucalyptus
I can see A-Rod in the locker room, one foot on the bench and the other on a Mariner in a classic "man spread", gesturing toward a spritz bottle and delivering the now-famous catch-phrase "Channel #8. Where Eau d' jock strap meets Eucalyptus."
It would be so much better if the bats were made out of Al (or some other more consistent material than wood) to a spec. Each stadium would get 'issued' a set of bats for use in games and players would select the length they want from the 'pool'. Both teams pull bats from the same stack.I also think an electronic 'umpire' at home plate should be implemented. Simple to do.But, since I really don't like watching baseball (or most other sports) don't mind me. I liked playing baseball, but, unless I was catching I got bored.
Baseball (like soccer) is an incredibly boring sport to watch if you're not "into" it. It will absolutely put anyone to sleep UNLESS they are aware of the player matchups, the pitchers' capabilities against the type of hitters they will face, the managers' strategies, etc. (I assume that soccer is the same way, since the action is like watching paint dry).Human umps are fine with me. And wooden bats are fine with me too. But all the "shattered bat" problems would be fixed if they just went back to the same (or equivalent) material and configuration that they used back when bats DIDN'T shatter on a regular basis. It's simple enough, but no one will do it ....Lannis
I tend to agree. I wonder how a composite bat would work. A block of plywood then cut down to a bat? Carbon Fiber bat?
Wouldn't that still shatter?
