Author Topic: Red Triangle & ECU ‘Unplugged’ Dashboard Alert – Found Short – How To Repair?  (Read 2816 times)

Literally loading my 09 Stelvio on the trailer towing up to Asheville to ride for a week around Nanatahala, Hot Springs and Roan Mtn. Turn the key and see red triangle and ECU alert on dashboard. Bike was fine 10 mins before so jumped on the forums and determined might be a loose wire or similar.

With the key on, turned the handlebars from left to right, no change, wiggled the right coil lead, then wiggled the left coil lead and ah ha, hear an electric switching noise, alerts go out, everything fine (but of course everything is not fine).

After more testing, find it is not the coil lead that is the issue but a wire collector harness (I do not know what else to call it) but with the key on and I move this harness, see pic, then I hear the same noise as when you initially turn the key on, the tach needle swinging up and all lights come on. In this event though the key is already on? Now the alert does not come on, no doubt will again though, but the short is most definitely associated with this bung of wires.

There is a collection of 20+ wires here so not sure where to start in determining the which wire(s) are involved or even what this termination of so many wires is for. Any thoughts on the topic would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Robert M.

Why do you say it is a short? Smoke? Blowing a fuse?

Looks like corrosion or something on that one wire in that harness.

That *is* a connector, isn't it? If so, getcha some Caig deoxit, take that connector apart, spray, insert, wiggle it around a little (the connector)  let dry for a couple of minutes, and go ride.

In another forum others comment to take the plug of the end and give the whole connector a thorough but gentle cleaning. I'll look closer at that one wore too. Is odd to have 20+ wires just ending in a cap but is 100% stock.

Odd set up. Wires appear to just go in one side and and back out the other. Like the "engineers" were planning more, but were shut off midstream. Suppose it is better than twisting wires together and using a wire nut.

I suspect that is for an ABS addon or something that wasn't on the 09.

ECU disconnected in my experience is usually the earth wire off the ECU coming adrift or snapping off the eye. If it is that it may be possible to simply put on a new eye and it'll be fine but sometimes if it happens 'Just Wrong' it bricks the ECU.

ecu disconnected means that the dash can't talk to the ecu. can be can bus, or the ecu has no power. The thing you have in the picture is a plug where the alarm can fit in. the connector has some pass through wires.

ECU 'earth' wire? Is this the ground for the ECU and is somewhere close to the ECU?

It's screwed directly onto the ECU.

See it now, all claen and secure. I have no idea why the ECU unplugged display happened. I cleanded the ABS/Security plug a big and secured with a zip tie. Buttoned all up and no issues but now I have the worry it will happen again. If so, I'll just need to run it up to the dealer. Thanks everyone for the comments.....
