New battery for 2013 V7
« on: August 24, 2016, 06:12:00 PM »
I'm planning a long trip starting in October and feel my battery could use replacement as it is 4 years old and once when I left it off the tender for a few weeks it couldn't start the bike.  It did recover once I charged it up but I feel it would be prudent to replace it.  Any thoughts on replacements?

I know there are Lithium batteries now but I have no knowledge of them other than they are lighter than lead/acid batteries.  Any preferred brands of either Li or Lead/Acid?

Odyssey, all 4 bikes have them. One is about 8 or 10 years old and still working, this bike sits for moths at a time without a charger and starts right up.

My 2 cents,

Lithium (either Lithium Ion or Lithium Iron Ferrite, the new kind) are really good for some applications, but I'd probably not use one in the '13 V7. First, they like to be warm - the colder it gets, the less cranking power they have, and when they hit a certain point they simply won't supply any power at all until they warm up. Second, they are not as good at cranking power unless you get a really good (read expensive) one. Read up on CCA equivalent ratings and you'll find out what I mean. Third, the V7 (and the earlier Breva) tends to have a bit of parasitic draw when parked - more than one might expect. LiIon / LiFe batteries don't really like being drawn way down, and they require a specialty charger; given the way the V7 behaves, I'd get a better quality AGM battery and a float charger/maintainer to get best possible battery life.

I'm not against LiIon / LiFe batteries - but they still have some way to go to be useful in all motorcycle applications. I had one in my Super Motard here in the desert and it worked great, but I wouldn't put one in my all-weather Norge, at least not yet.

Out of curiosity, do you have the stock voltage regulator on your bike?

No, replaced it a year or so ago with a Mosfet R/R.

Thanks for the replies.

I just remembered I replaced my old scooter battery with a MotoBatt one and had good luck with it so I've ordered a MotoBatt MBTX12U battery for the replacement.

Edit;  Found the MotoBatt MBYZ16H will fit and has 240 CCA and 16.5 aH vs the 12U that has 200 CCA and 14 aH.  http://www.motobatt.com/MBYZ16H?search=mbyz

cost was about $30 more for the MBYZ ($107 total)

SSB Power Sports Lithium in both my V7's. Do not need a special charger; 425 CCA; no trouble starting, but then it rarely gets as cold here in Oz. Also, I don't think the SSB's are widely available in the US. Our local guzzi mechanic prefers recommending gel over lithium - he has experienced problems  with all lithiums in guzzis & prefers reliability. I'm sticking with my SSB's - they have been good to me for 5 years so far.
