Scura for Sale in Wisconsin -anyone familiar with this one?
« on: September 01, 2016, 01:02:35 PM »
Am bitten by the Scura bug having seen a few tasty ones here on the board.  Found this one on Cycle Trader.

Anyone familiar with this bike...any other tips regarding the Scura I should query the owner about?  Seems like he hasn't ridden it a lot...I just love the looks of these and am seriously tempted to do a fly and ride.  Feedback welcomed!

looks like it's Jackson Miss, not Wisc

I think you'll find it a more exciting ride than your Norge.

Single plate clutch. Fork springs set up for a midget. Other than that, they are well sorted.

Thanks Chuck...fairly easy to find replacement parts for these, not so esoteric as the Centauro then?  I'm loving this bike from the looks, hope I'd love to ride it as well.

Indeed...he states it is single plate...sounds like I need to factor that in...very low miles too...he hasn't driven it much.  Bike really seems to have had a low mileage life...

you can't "fix" the single plate.. my friend went thru 2 in 65,000 miles.

no Ohlins but if I had the money I'd want to look at this one.

>am seriously tempted to do a fly and ride.

That's how I picked up my Scura.  Rode it from Missouri to Arizona.
It makes a pretty nice sport touring bike.  Small fairing, plush
suspension, shaft drive.

I did change to a RAM single plate clutch.
A single plate keeps the snick, snick shifting and rev happy motor
that gives Scura it's unique character.  Unlike any other Guzzi.

IMHO a well sorted Scura is the very best of the V11's.

Submit to the dark side.  Scura.

Scurra single plate clutch

It can be worse than that. I've seen a picture of the entire bell housing destroyed when the flywheel blew up. As Pete said, "there are some dangly bits very near that.." :boozing:

Scurra single plate clutch

So how do Scura owners deal with the single plate clutch ?  Install a better than OEM one ?  Install a dual plate ?

That's what I'm hoping to find out...got a good reply last night from the owner, multi Guzzi owner (that's a good thing).

I'll have to chat with MPH and find out what a conversion from single plate to dual plate will cost here in the event it blows.

Only thing wrong with the bike he says is the neutral light switch needs to be fixed...other than that, sounds like it's running perfectly.

Will have a video from him later to listen to the engine a bit...

If all works out, could be a Scura in the garage to keep the Norge company, I think that will be a nice combo...

Here's what looks to be a very nice Ballabio for sale on Ebay, right there in the Houston area.
I've always really liked these, with their small fairing and more standard seating position.
No Ohlins suspension, but they still handle great, and look fantastic. You don't see many around

Yay for Scuras. Get it and come over to V11LeMans for playtime.

Watch out for:

Clutch - in addition to what' already been discussed, the main expense is getting a new flywheel and trans input hub that work with the standard twin-plate clutch - after that, the standard twin-plate clutch parts are not too expensive. You can probably ride it for several thousand more miles without worry, but there comes a point when you start wondering when your number will come up. If it "blows" it can be catastrophic, taking out both engine and transmission cases.

Fork Springs - pretty easy fix if needed. I kept stock springs, but I weigh 165.

Engine paint - all 2002 models (not just Scura) had a textured paint that is prone to bubble and peel.

Addiction - it is the mostest funnest bestest motorcycle of all time and everything else will simply pale in comparison.

Rear tire wear - seems to be linked to throttle habits...

Matte paint - if it's ever been waxed or silicone sprayed, it can lose the cool matte finish.

Other normal Guzzi/V11 stuff: Veglia gauges likely to die, shift spring could break (preventable with minor mod)

Jealousy - other riders will stare longingly at you and your Scura

Eye Candy!!!  Great list of things to watch for!!  Thanks Scud - you should make a 24x36 poster of that picture!

An interesting story on this one I'm looking at...seems to have been carefully and lovingly fixed a number of issues the prior owners had not done.  It does sound like a test ride is in order as I'm sure its a LOT more nimble than the Norge I'm used to riding with a racing flywheel and snick snick snick of a very nice shifting bike.

There's just something completely tempting out the Italian Darth Vader here!

I'll look at the Ballabio also...

Thanks. My Scura had OCD - obsessive compulsive darkening. I went on a mission to black-out all sorts of small shiny bits.

The Ballabio has an unfortunate (in my opinion) frame-mounted fairing, while the Scura's is fork-mounted and tucked in tighter.

points to look at carefully.. sidestand mount, it goes into the engine block.

frame to timing cover/engine- below front of tank.. can bust easy if dropped just right.

swelling of tank.. look around the steering neck is it uniform or does it come closer to the neck on the right side, then look under there and make sure the butt end of a frame tube crossmenber is not rubbing a hole thru the tank.

d/s u-joints look like they've been serviced? esp the front zirk..

is there a Roper plate? ++

Do you believe MI really rebuilt the transmission? or just change the spring, it's entirely different thing.. and why doesn't he fix the neutral light, how hard could that be?
since he just got it in February, I wonder if you can track down the previous owner for more detail..
bring some $ figures for the clutch and offer $1,000 less..  as said above you also need a twin plate flywheel if going that route..
