Three sealer

In Greg Benders assembly of an 850  Motor (many thanks to you Greg    ) he recommends Threebond 1104 for the threads in certain places.  A couple of questions...

Is this for fatener retention (similar to lock tite) or for fluid leakage?


I am having problems finding Threebond 1104.  Is this the same as something called Yamabond or probably others?

That would surely be for sealing the threads. Like the two lower bolts in the rear bearing carrier need sealed. Yamabond should be good.

Threebond is for oil sealing not thread locking. It is sold under various names; Yamabond etc. and is good stuff.

Ducati use it in place of gaskets on just about every metal to metal assembly (other than head to cylinder etc.), I rebuilt my 900 Monster engine using it between the crankcase halves with no leaks plus it saves buying gaskets and compensating for gasket thickness with shims...

     Arctic Cat dealers always carried it for sealing their crankcase halves together, but that was several years ago, don't know now. Google can be your friend also.

Threebond had the original recipe and then Yamaha bought it and named theirs Yamabond, then Honda bought and called it Hondabond . It is also known as Ultra-gray. Subaru also uses it to seal crank case halves,but theirs is pricy, Permatex gray is another option

The bolts in question may screw into an oil galley (or similar) and if you don't put sealer on the bolt threads the bolts will actually leak oil.

If it's the sealant I use Threebond 1211. If it's a thread locker then Loctite 247, the blue one is the go.

Always use Threebond or other sealants sparingly! It's not bloody toothpaste! The thinnest smear is quite sufficient.

My son runs alcohol powered garden tractor pullers, and runs very high compression. He uses a sealer, Ultra-Gray I think, and no head gasket.

The Threebond 1104 is the case sealer. I have used this Permatex thread sealer for bolts and threaded covers that have to be oil tight.

Many professional mechanics 'round these parts, including several diesel mechanics I know, have gone to using "Loctite 515" sealer for any sort of flange connections, like water pumps, valve covers, cylinder bases, etc.    I use it instead of paper gaskets everywhere except cylinder heads, and don't have any leak problems even on my old Brit bikes.   It's anaerobic, won't clog anything up, and makes disassembly easy ....
