Breva cranks but won't start
« on: September 14, 2016, 04:57:54 PM »
My 2007 V1100 Breva started backfiring a few times a mile before it crapped out.  It seemed to be running out of fuel, but we put 6 liters in, and still no start.  Bike would fuffle along for 10 sec. at most, so it came home in the truck.  I may have to haul it to a dealership.  I've performed the starter relay patch with a fuse holder, and it cranks like crazy.  I guess a pro has to hook up diagnostics?  I wish I had the Guzzi diagnostics.  Maybe I should get that stuff?  It would still take me months to fix it...  Any Ideas out there?  Have any of you run across this?

Check the basics, does it have fuel and/or spark?

There is already one failed fuel filter this week...

Where is the fuel filter?  Inside the tank, or underneath it?  I've had the tank off before, just can't remember seeing the fuel filter.  Is it a metal can like on a car?

The fuel filter is in the tank and attached to the fuel pump. There is an access port on the bottom side of the tank.
There are probably a number of posts around regarding the filter as there has been quite a bit of discussion on it.

The stock filter will probably be a half plastic/half metal deal. You can get a full metal filter online or from your local auto parts store for much less than the Guzzi item. They do use special clamps which are also sourced online.

I used the search tool for "Breva Fuel Filter" and came up with a ton of hits.

This looks to be a good one:

But, be sure to test for spark and fuel before you go tearing stuff apart. On the other hand, it is possible there is a half plastic 9 year old fuel filter in your tank and it's probably time to replace it anyway.

There's fuel in the tank, but I hope a lack of fuel would be down to a clogged original fuel filer anyway.  It tries to run, so there's probably enough sparks.  It crapped out as though it was out of fuel.  I'll check out the fuel filter thread.  It would be awesome to find a generic example from an auto parts store!

I used a Wix 33032, you can cross reference that number. It's an easy 5/16" (hose size) filter that should be available about anywhere.

I ended up picking up the oetiker clamps on eBay and used a pair of side cutters to crimp them.

Early CARC bikes, Breva and Griso, were prone to blowing the hose off the fuel filter due to the use of non submersible hose betwixt pump and filter.

Remove tank and empty, remove pump from tank. Blown off hose will be obvious.

<Scraping dusty cobwebs from my memory> I think if you open the fuel filler cap and turn the key on you'll see fuel swirling if the filter has come undone. I have a dollar that says that's what the problem is, at any rate.
