Question About the "V#"

I'm new here and still learning the MG lingo so bear with me if this seems a silly question....

In cars the "V" stands for the design of the engine and the subsequent number stands for the number of cylinders. Thus, a V6 if a V design with six cylinders, a V8 usually has eight spark plugs, and so forth. I own a MG V7 which appears about five cylinders short by this logic. Did I get a defective bike?

Okay, that was lame. I know it's only supposed to have two cylinders but, my question is, what does the MG V7, V9, etc., stand for, if anything? Version 7?

Don't mean a thang.  It's just marketing's way of keeping the consumer confused.  V7 can mean the original BB V700, the early 70's BB racer, or the new series of smallblocks.  V8 . . V9 .. building on the engine size.  Now ask about 2V 4V 8V or how does a loop cali align with a tonti cali.  Is a V11 referring to a model or an engine?  And how about the SPOT?

That should put some body english on the topic.   :evil:

 Heck , Honda's modern GP bikes are designated RC 211 V thru RC 214 V , which it turns out actually translates to RC Twentyone One V and RC Twentyone Four . Explain that mister Wizard  :shocked:

Displacement in CC, rounded.

V7 = 700-750cc

V9 = 900cc

V10 = 1000cc

V11 = 1100cc
