Any experiences, stories from Ten Sleep Canyon Wyoming?
« on: October 14, 2016, 02:50:39 PM »
When I was 12/13 my dad took me on a tour from Chicago to the great American west, on the back of his 78 BMW/7!  It was a fantastic trip, and I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to spend that kind of time with my Dad, just me and him as we found new experiences together.  One of the special places that had a deep impact on my Dad, and over the years has grown on me too, was piloting through Ten Sleep Canyon, the place was surreal in its majesty, almost supernatural, at least thats how it seem to my Dad and I as we talk over some of those old memories.  We stayed at a great campground, with hot showers, tent camping was $1 a night!!!

Just wondering if anybody else has a story of the area?

Years ago I attended a small gathering of different Sioux families at Ten Sleeps . The name comes from the fact that the area lay 1/2 of the journey between 2 large settlements of Sioux , literally Ten Sleeps required to make the journey . Yeah , a special place .

There was an entertaining thread called "She Rides Ten Sleep" on ADV Rider a while back...funny....17 days to get to 10 Sleep from Seattle...with just 2 pics to show for it.  I was thinking of going thru on our trip back from John Day this year as we went thru Cody and Thermopolis, we should have detoured to visit the Brewery there in Ten sleep.

Ten Sleep now has a brewery!!  I was there in July.  The camp ground....not so much.

This was the camping area:

I guess, with enough beer, it's just fine.

The ride from Ten Sleep to Buffalo is spectacular.

Coming down the Bighorn Mountains from Buffalo on 19, went through Ten Sleep. I was very impressed with the light as it was late in the day. Very very pretty ride. But I was in a car with a gal I had a serious crush on at the time.

However; I did ride my CJ360T from Duluth to Rapid City where I met her and we took her car on a loop through the Tetons. Considering all the snow we hit on the way out of the Tetons that was a good choice.

Beats other campgrounds that I've been in.  :thumb:

Yes indeed.  Early in my geoscience career I worked exploration in the Big Horn Basin, WY.  We did field geology and seismic in the Tensleep area. Also the town is the type section locality for the Tensleep formation (Pennsylvanian age) that is the major oil producing reservoir for the Basin.
Stayed there many nights, got to know a green parrot named Pedro at the local gas station.  Beautiful area.  My hope is to get up to the Big Horn Basin next summer, and into Cody and such.  There are many petroglyph sites in the Basin.  Most are very hard to find.  Also wild horses.

Drilled some wells there too.  Even found some of the "stuff" NW of Tensleep.  The old story:  ten nights to cross the Basin east to west.  Interior is extremely rough and dry country except for Greybull River drainage.  Home of the Lakota.
