The new V7s and fairings.
« on: October 15, 2016, 10:10:49 PM »
I'm trying to convince a friend to buy a V7. It's an ideal bike for this country and an ideal bike for him.

The thing is he is not negotiable on weather and wind protection and is currently eyeing up the BMW 750 triple.

I'm convinced the V7 would be a better bet for him but it would need to have a cruising fairing. Either a full one of an effective handle bar one.

Has anyone done this, or have pics of one so set up? What fairing would be good on one?

I recall seeing for example a couple of  Lemans years ago that hag MG lowers grafted to BMW uppers which seemed to work well.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There was one listed for sale in southern MD and posted in at least one Craigslist ad/thread on here with a Vetter fairing or the like.

Also Jay had a V7C he ran with a large windscreen from Harpers. I bet he has picks of that.

I assume Cam's fairing is too small for this purpose?

Hey John, you may wanna take a look at this thread from a short while back.  Lots of options there including the great one I used to have on my previous V7.

I'm looking for, but, haven't found pictures of it on my V7C.

I used it for cold weather.   It did a great job.   It was tall enough to put most air over my helmet, and wide enough down low to deflect the cold air away from my hands.

With the small mounting hardware left in place, it could be detached/attached to the bike in minutes w/o tools.

Bingo, the bike has been sold, but the thread was at least still in the swap meet section:

Link from the other thread of what I actually purchased from Harper's (may or may not actually be the Plexistar 2, but, that looks to be the one on National's site):

Of course, but enlightening someone as to possibilities/options could be a friendly act, no?

When the OP asks for suggestions, it would be rude not to offer some up. :cheesy:

It could be if the buyer is seeking possibilities/options. That doesn't seem to be the case here as the buyer has his sights set on a BMW while the OP is trying to convince him otherwise.

I guess I'm just as guilty as others sometimes, but geez does every thread need to have someone making a lecture to the OP based on some assumed perception of the OP's intention.

We really have almost no idea of the friendship between John and this individual, or the level of experience of this individual, or the market and environment these individuals live and ride in, or...

It seems like you're giving an unnecessary lecture in response to a simple question.

A couple of years back I rode a 750 Breva around NZ with my wife - we had a MG windscreen which I made higher which made it much quieter.  After market heated grips were also fitted.

My Airhead BMW has a 'composite' fairing of windscreen / hand protectors / leg shields mounted to crash bars / footflaps below the cylinders - works really well, and if I rode my V7 in winter I would want to build something similar.

A faired K75RT will be much heavier / flabbier and not so good on NZ twisties as a V7 - it is a much larger bike, but better 2 up.

I am not lecturing anybody if you'll notice I started my response with "personally", that means only me.

To be clear I don't have any problem with you and I don't know why I'm choosing this time to speak up.

That said, you're being disingenuous with that reply. Of course you're lecturing because there's no other reason to share what you'd do "personally".

Ok, well, I can see where you are coming from Perazzimx14 so despite Kev answering your comment quite well I think I should explain the situation a bit.

He is a few years younger than me and I have known him for 46 years. He has some experience with motorcycles but while not a rank beginner this experience is quite limited.  He likes and enjoys them but it has never really been an overriding passion for him. My experience is more extensive and has more depth than his and as such is of use to him. He knows this  and he relies on it quite a bit.

He has a bit of a 'lean' toward Beemers (he is of German descent after all) and tends to put everything else on a lesser level. (bit like me and BSAs really). His last bike was a K100. It was a dog and too big for him. Gone now.

He is also a bit inclined to buy from whats on offer off the shelf rather than order what he wants and is frightened off by the idea of importing.  (Not the right attitude in this country really)

While I rather like the 3 cyl. Beemer too,   taking his experience, needs and intended use into account, while I think he would Like the Beemer, I think he would Love the Guzzi.

What I'm trying to do is to get him to see them as equal contenders and to test ride both next time he is in England (he goes there every year) and NOT to discount the Guzzi just because it doesn't come with a full fairing. An adequate one could always be fitted.  The one on the bike in the garage pictured above would be the berries I think . What is it?

Of course I thought the windjammer suited the look and offered good protection too. If I hadn't sold it, some day  I was going to try the kaw police fairing. "in the eye of the beholder" for sure but to me a compatible aesthetic. May someday try in on the v700 since the fairing needs a mount. ...no worse than some customizing I've seen/done

To my eye there are very few fairings, esp. handlebar fairings that actually enhance the looks of a bike if they are actually big enough to actually provide some real protection.  I don't think such fairings do much for handling and performance as a rule either. How ever at least a completely clear one minimises the visual impact. Hopefully it will serve the initial purpose of showing that he need not discount a bike on the basis that it doesn't come with one.

I wonder how well that one works.

Yep, sure is, but, it served its purpose well, allowing me to enjoy riding well into the cold months.

I have a big ugly windshield for the F800GT, which serves that duty now, sparing m V7 Special from having to wear the butt-ugly fairing/windshield.

I have a Rifle Sport fairing on my Breva 750 that works GREAT for weather protection while not weighing much.  I've had it on a CX100, Convert, and VX800 Suzuki.  That should tell you how much I like it.  But no one else follows my lead.   I can't show you a pic because I don't know how to do that and don't take many pics of my bikes.    Seems everyone else gets a windshield. I've used the same fairing on all the bikes I listed here.  :thumb:

It works really well.  :thumb: The 3 works a little better because it extends past the turn signals.  Easy on and off.
