Opinions on tank coating
« on: October 17, 2016, 05:30:01 PM »
So I must have gotten lax this past year. There's a fine pattern of rust spots inside the tank on Gina the V50. Nothing that won't clean up with an acid wash. I'm just a bit leery about getting good adhesion and subsequent flaking of anything I use. The caswell epoxy seems like the best quality. However- what's the best way to make sure the surface is prepped?  I've heard of using drywall screws- but it seems like a few might get stuck in there. Any thoughts?

Personally I'd use something like Evapo-Rust, rather than acid, to avoid the chance that some acid will get stuck in the seams and cause future corrosion.  And if I wanted to line the tank, I'd follow Caswell's resommended preparation procedure.

But for a little fine rust, I'd make sure I had a good inline filter and wouldn't give it another thought unless it got worse.

I'd just clean the rust out with Evapo-Rust and not coat it.

Finished the restoration on my Velocette a few months ago and am currently working on 3 OSSA fiberglass tanks, so have explored most possibilities. If your steel tank has light rust and no leaks to worry about advice I got from Don Hutchinson (the Triumph tank guru) was derust and leave it alone. I used Metal Rescue which worked very well (tank must be cleaned first, soap screws, etc.). It's expensive at $25/gal. and takes 24 hr., but does work. Caswell's can be difficult to get a long lasting bond on steel unless the directions are meticulously followed, especially in regards to temp. and cleaning.
On old, funky, oil fouled fiberglass you have no choice, an epoxy product must be used. It's the only thing that will seal off the old constantly gassing off and degrading polyester/styrene resins. To get glass clean enough you must use a solvent, I use laquer thinner, but acetone may be necessary. When using Caswell's I always give it a full week to fully cure before exposing it to gas.

I just want to say that acetone is not a good oil solvent but lacquer thinner is. I learned this as a millwright years ago when cleaning some machine tools before working on them. If I use acetone, it is after I have used lacquer thinner. Mineral spirits will not hurt most paints and is a good oil solvent but will leave a slight petroleum film that is removed with lacquer thinner. Use solvents before soap and water or the solvent just sits on the soap and water.
