My new occupation is mortician. I do a lot.of funerals. What you are looking at is ;

1) over the alter. I think it's called an alcave. Could be wrong. Always in the centre is either a symbol for Christ like a dove or the royal crest of the local King.

2) These are several images from Bible stories (we think) although partially restored many features remain missing.

3) This tablet tells when the church was built who was king and so on. Old German script and hard to read.

I go into a bunch of old churches too, obviously not as old as the ones you're seeing. Keep those pics coming! I find this quite interesting!

I love this one
Unmitigated risk aversion is the new Puritanism; complete with witch hunts funny outfits and humorless preachers thundering doom. The Deity is Safety; Satan is a Lawyer; but the object is the same: to suck the life out of life and tell you how to live it.

Very nice! I am a big gothic fan. Beautiful architecture. There is a website called Skyscraper City that is all things architecture. One of the mods started a post on French castles and chateaus. For those who are interested that thread is beyond awesome. Now over 175 pages of pics on French chateaus. Many of them gothic. The great gothic cathedrals of France and Germany are so beautiful.
A small gothic tidbit. The builders used mostly dark blue and dark red for the stained glass windows. From inside on a sunny day the colors blend to form purple, the color of royalty and spirituality. Light flooded the interiors.
Great pics and hope to see more.

Not sure if you see this kind of stuff in Europe or US but British stonemasons had a sense of humour, this in a Devon church, known locally as the rudeman
Don't know date but isn't new
