I'm looking at a 28 foot class A motorhome with this powerplant in it. 52K miles. Anyone familiar with these? Is this powerful enough to pull a small Class A? Can I get it repaired if need be? It is mated to a 4 speed automatic trans, and is a puller, not a pusher. Thanks in advance.

Is it a Trek Safari? One of my buddies has one and it's sloooow but functional. I have a Mitsubishi Fuso with a flatbed camper which gets around pretty well but it's a 4.9 liter with a 6 spd Aisin transmission.

Can't see the model number any idea of its age? Possibly a 4BD1-T (t is for turbo charged) 3.9 litre not sure what class A means and you'll have to define powerful enough. Dry lined motor rings and sleeves easily obtainable and relatively cheap for a diesel. Fitted to 5-7tonne (capacity trucks) from factory. It won't be fast redline will be around 3500rpm and a fairly industrial motor.

Randy loves his Safari, he drives it all the way to East Texas a couple times a year (from Bellingham)  I also have a '91 Fuso with 320,000 miles on it that still runs like a top.

Oh cool!  What a great way to use the truck for dual purposes, rather than have a dedicated motorhome parked 90% of the time.

Pickup truck by day, RV puller on holidays  :)

I like that slide on camper.  Much better than the versions we have for pickups.  And I like the truck too.  If they weren't so big I'd consider turning one into my towing truck.

I've never heard of one.  Looks like a great unit to me.  Isuzu reliability and (perhaps) fuel economy in one package.

Yes..... sort of it was made for the ADF in various formats buy Jaguar Rover Australia under the Perentie project they came in various guises 4by4 FFR Regional Patrol General Cargo etc etc and 6by6 in cargo bushranger (troop carrying) ambulance and a few other guises including the one pictured LRPV (Long Range Patrol Vehicle which is exclusively used buy the SASR.

Relevance to this thread? JRA and the ADF decided the stock diesel motors rover offered at the time (early/mid 80's) were a bit weedy and unreliable. JRA's solution was to fit to the 4by4's a 4BD1 3.9 4 cylinder NA diesel which Isuzu fitted to 3-5tonne trucks as standard and in the 6by6's a 4BD1-T T for turbo which were in 5-7tonne trucks. If you brought a civil 110 at the time and ticked the diesel option you also got the 4BD1 they are good but slow massively reliable although in some ways perfect to give to the troop to drive around in. Currently been phased out for G Wagons after lasting well past their life expectancy.

Side note the 6by 6 is permanent 4wd front and the "intermediate" axel and the third axel is engaged via a PTO drive has a rocker rear leaf setup and incredibly slow geared down through the floor 100kph redline in top gear. Anecdotally used to rescue stuck Humvees in the dessert. If you are hunting through the auctions through and want a good off road vehicle get the 4by4 if you want something thats good off road with 2 metric tonne as a load, well that was the design brief of the 6 by 6.
