2011 Norge Fuel Tank Venting

Question for the well versed out there in Guuzi land..
My Norge seems to be starving for fuel at times. Occasional missing and subsequent surging. Today while out for a ride and gas stop. I opened the gas cap and heard/saw the fuel tank relieving itself. (Sucking sound and visual tank relief). Haven't been riding nearly as much as I want to due to work schedules and I wonder about possible hose deterioration due to sitting with gas in it. Are there any items I should be looking at? I was really surprised how much vacuum was drawn on the tank until I opened it. Looking for any suggestions on where to look. I did a search on the forum and didn't see anything on this issue.

Okay, I'll bite. Pretty well versed in all types of maintenance and just been around for a long time too. I am assuming this has to do with a canister under the tank. What is a  "canister-ectomy." exactly and what is the purpose of this elusive canister when it is working?

I was hoping someone with knowledge would have joined in by now. (I have none!) Your problem may have nothing to do with your California-required charcoal emissions evaporation canister (or it may). I remember seeing many posts on here over the years discussing this subject. Hopefully someone will join in.

The canister captures the gas fumes from your tank and prevents them from entering the atmosphere. It is under the seat all the way in the back on the norge. Pretty sure this is just for capturing fumes escaping under pressure when the tank heats up. From what you describe it sounds like the vent tube is clogged that lets air in as the fuel level drops. I would just check all the hoses coming off the tank & make sure they are clear, the hose you are looking for runs from the tank to the bottom of the chassis.

There is a hose that runs on the left side of the frame under the seat that ends beside the tool kit. Nothing on the end of the hose but just a clamp of some sort. Could that have been going to the canister? I've had the bike for a few years and have not run into anything like this before. I bought it with on 2500 miles on it a few years ago. I don't think it was ever in a dealers shop until I took it in a few weeks ago. I just had it in for a valve adjustment and service. Did the tank have to be pulled to access the valves for adjustment? Merely looking for a connection if the lines had to be disturbed from the original factory build.

Sounds to me like someone removed your canister, it is just a cylinder about the size of a beer can mounted just behind the toolkit in front of the tail light. Think if you search the forum you should find a drawing of the layout for the European evaporitive system. If your canister is gone that is what your set up should look like. It is possible you have a vacuum line that is not plugged off or routed correctly, not as simple as just yanking the canister & leaving the lines dangling. It is definitely not necessary to remove the tank to adjust the valves.

With the seat off there are 2 line from your tank at the back, they criscross under the rear tank mount. Sounds like your can is gone, so, make sure these lines go down to outside air under bike. One is the lid drain and the other cap vent. Check the line that goes from L to R intake manifolds and discard the 'T' and make it a strait or replace w/1 piece line. The 'T' would have ended up in back at the can.

Thanks gents. From what you are all saying, I would say the canister is gone. The hose going back to the tail light area is now just an open hose.

I'll be checking the drain and vent line as soon as I can make sure which those are. Just the way it acted and the relieving of the tank when the cap was opened leads me to think a vent line plugged somewhere. It has to be able to replace the air in the tank as fuel is consumed. More checking ahead as soon as it warms just a bit. If I read this all correctly, the canister was just to trap errant fumes escaping from the system? I wondered when I saw a line with a clamp but nothing attaching to it.
