Made rear/mid sets for my 2000 Jackal for about $20
« on: February 12, 2017, 04:14:27 PM »
I couldn't stand the peg position on the Jackal. I like to lift my legs and have the pegs right there. I don't like to put my feet out forward and I am out of balance if I want to stand on my pegs.
So I moved them back about 7 1/2 inches which is perfect for me. I'm too cheap to spring for a complete bolt on solution.

I had to fabricate new peg supports that bolt to the frame. I used 2 pieces of 3/8 inch thick aluminum bar that was 2" x  12" (cost $12) and cut and shaped it using the Jackal rear peg and muffler support as a template.
I then had to mount pivots for the shift and brake levers. I used 5/8" OD steel pipe for this. I cut off the rear part of the shift lever for the heel.
I still have a bit to do with the linkage. I ordered some heim joints from ebay for about $6 for the shift linkage and will just cut and re thread the brake rod.

I made a couple of spacers out of 1/4' aluminum to replace the 1/8" factory steel ones between the 2 bolts that hold the rear peg /muffler bracket and the frame together just below the swing arm pivot lock nuts. Just needed a bit more clearance between the new peg brackets and the frame tubes to clear everything.

I went even cheaper.  I put the front pegs where the rear are and the rear pegs where the exhaust mounts.

Orange Guzzi,

That only leaves about 4 inches between the front and rear pegs. If I even put my rear pegs back on there would be about 10 1/2" between the pegs.

Post some pics of how you did your shift and brake setup.

That's a nice mod! I've seen many different versions of this, yours is nice looking, curious to see the final set up and hear how it works for you.  I have been contemplating this myself, never did get used to the "feet forward" position.  :boozing:

I finally took it out for a short spin today (about 20 miles) and the peg and shifter setup is just about perfect for me. I was hoping to go for a longer ride tomorrow but the left fork started spraying oil all over the bike and exhaust header so it will be out of commission for another couple of weeks probably.
I think I need to adjust the brake and shift levers down about another 1/2 to 1".
I will post some more pics. The cheap 1/4" heim joints work great . Much less slop than the old shift linkage.
I'm glad I went this route because the cost is right and I like the way it looks and works and it seems sturdy and should hold up fine I think.

You and I both know it's not the cost that determines how we solve problems.  :)

Made a couple more adjustments of linkages and took a few more pics.

I have also included pics of my clip-ons ($27 from China and quality seems very good). For me the ergonomics are just right now. Foot and arm reach with the low rise bars feels about like my T3 . The clip-ons are not that low because I dropped the forks about an inch above the triple clamp and mounted the clip-ons on top and they also have a bit of rise on the clamp bracket. Need to get some shorter cables still.
I may try some non folding cnc aluminum chinese pegs because the Jackal ones are a little long and my feet seem to rest more where the pegs fold up rather than on the peg rubbers.

Quit teasing us, man. Lets see the whole bike. Particularly curious how it sits with the clip ons.

OK, no more teasing. Full frontal and a derriere shot too.
Actually I may put a T/T3/Convert tank and seat on it if I can find one for not too much. I prefer a longer flat seat that I can move around on a bit. I would also like the extra couple gallons of fuel. The air box is removed so there is a lot of extra space.

This is great

Did you have any trouble finding the bits to do the linkages? 'I need to do this on my bike too!

I have up dated it a bit with different pegs.

These pegs gave a much more solid feel than the stock Guzzi folding pegs. As I posted earlier, they also don't stick out as far so my foot is in a better place too. I think they were about $9 from China.

I used Heim joints for the shift linkage from ebay. I used an old brake rod from a T3 on the brake side although I had extra Heim joints but I did not have the right rod at time of assembly and that old one worked.

I threaded the holes where the pegs and levers attached and used a nut also. The hard part was finding a suitable tube to make a spacer for the brake and shift lever to pivot on that was the right diameter and also strong enough to be able to tighten the assembly without crushing or deforming.

are your forks raised in the triple clamps by what looks like an inch? is the fender near hitting the alt cover then?

Yes the forks are raised exactly an inch and the fender does not hit the cover. I prefer the handling of the Jackal the way it is set up now to my Calvin. I also run a 130/90 17 rear on the Jackal. Overall the handling is good but there is a bit too much stiction in the forks. I also use no steering damper.
