Getting "older" sucks
« on: February 19, 2017, 02:14:56 PM »
I've been sorting the temperamental oil pressure sensor connection out on my B11 by fitting my version of ITSecs little loom (serves me out for doing it when ISTsec is short on supplies) and a couple of isses
  • Found that my back was starting to ache so decide to stick the bike up on my EazyRizer Jack. Took me 15 minutes to get it attached and definitely did my back in
  • I wear varifocal glasses most of the time and couldn't focus on the job in hand . Glasses off I couldn't see diddly squat Glasses on I couldn't get my head in the right place. Then switched to my computer glasses so could finally see Wahoo. Bad news I now have the varifocals lying about the workshop somewhere waiting to get stuff dropped on them or lost co's I can see them with the computer glasses

I'm only 57 this year but this could get very irritating very quick

59 here.  I like good vision and embrace glasses.  I have five pairs:

1. General bifocals (with line) that I wear around the house and for riding
2. Trifocals (with lines) that I had made with the same prescription as my bifocals, plus an extra strong section for welding, soldering, and other close work
3. Computer glasses that are single single vision lenses that are the prescription of my general bifocals' strong section
4. TV glasses that are single vision lenses that are the prescription of my general bifocals' weak section
5. Bifocal sunglasses (with line)

I get all by mail order, mostly from Zenni Optical.  They're good quality for very little money.  My wife like the vari-focus type and gets them from Zenni as well.

I'll be 58 in a couple months and discovered I'm turning into 'that guy'.

You know the guy. A friend rides up with someone in tow and says " hey, here's Tom. He's my friend and wanted to ride with us today ".

Tom's a nice enough guy, amiable, been around awhile, knows enough. Then it's time to go. Tom takes ten minutes to put on his jacket and helmet.  Then he realizes he forgot to put in his earplugs, so off comes the helmet.

Once all that is finished and everyone is ready to go, Tom can't locate his keys. He had them when he arrived.  After another few minutes searching countless pockets, he finally finds them and is ready to. Just as soon as he finds his missing left glove. Oh, haha. He's sitting on it.

Luckily I realize the symptoms  and and work on rectifying them before this scenario actually plays out in reality😊

Around here, "that guy" rides around in his old F150 pickup at 32 MPH with his right blinker on all the time, wearing an old fedora.

I keep reading glasses all over so I don't get into frustrations like that. No aches or pains, still lifting what needs lifting and all. But I'll never see 57 again!

Yes getting old sucks.  Getting older really sucks big time.  Anything older than that is just not describable.
However, eating Indian food, (that's Asian Indian) will insure that you get the right nourishments to fend off
the dreaded old timers disease that causes memory loss and other mental aberrations.  Those people have known civilization a very long time, maybe the longest in the world.  This gives them a lot of experience in selecting a diet that
contributes to longevity of mind and body.  After all look at the other practices of health we attribute to those people.
Like, Yoga for instance and some other well known practices.
One of my favorites is Bombay lentils.  Yes, lentils are edible in spite of popular opinion.  I pour this stuff over soft boiled eggs often, maybe 2 to 4 times a week.  I like other curry dishes and things with turmeric and ginger too.
Also I have a liking for putting vinegar into my cranberry juice to give it a little zap.  Half a shot to one shot to a twelve ounce drink of juice.  Bragg apple cider vinegar is my favorite.  It is a great preventative or cure for muscle cramps too.

knocking on 60 next month.  I feel it everytime I have to push the breva out the storage building and it gets stuck in the mud after a rain.  Geez, I am finding muscles that I never knew I had.

Yep 59 here. But if you went out and grabbed 100 guys off the street at random of 60 or over, I'm thinking that 80% of them would either shit themselves at the thought of riding a big bike fairly crisply, or kill themselves trying. And when your old mate is buggerising around looking for his paraphernalia, we're understanding enough I hope, to wait for him, because we know he's sweating like a whore in a church trying to get everything right, like his mates around him seem to be able to. I can wait all day as long as it's not me that's holding up the show. (I'll bet it sometimes is). Ok that you feel like a silly old fart for losing your glasses and buggerising around like an old sloth, but that's 'cause you're actually out there doing it !!! Am I incorrect in any meaningful way ???

Meaningful, and also frightening.

For muscle cramps I eat a banana.  If I don't eat meat on a regular basis I'm in trouble.  I'm 73 and the old farts who have to stop to pee every 20 min. are the guys I avoid.

I quit cigarettes some years ago.  That's where I got the money to buy the new house, cash deal, no mortgage, no loan.
I quit about half a life time ago.  I was a three pack a day smoker.  At todays prices that's about what a monthly house payment would have been.  At the time I quit I could buy carton of cigarettes at the PX for three dollars.  That made it about a 35 dollar a month habit.  I don't know the price of cigarettes today but I know it is rediculous.

Yep, getting older can suck.  Been wearing reading glasses since I was 40.  Now I wear progressives.  I also keep around reading glasses when working on stuff up close (like a bike).

Holding up a group?  Not me.  Usually first one ready to go.  I wait on the youngsters who are busy talking on their phones or bragging about the latest doo dads they put on their rockets.

I don't lead as I never was a fast rider.  Two of the faster riders I have been around were both in their 70's (and that doesn't count Wayne :)  ).  One I met on a CO highway.  He was riding a CBR with a girlfriend on the back.  I thought I was taking a sweeper at a pretty good speed.  He passed me going at least 20mph faster.  Met them at the next stop.  He was 72 and she was 65.  He had also raced when younger.

I'll be 63 in August...and sadly, still "carrying a bag" and still working full-time...like the Big Dog Road Warrior that I am.    I have all the aches and pains like everyone else, but Ibuprofen helps, so I keep moving forward.  Movement, in general, is a good thing! Still riding motorcycles  and hiking, (when I am not on the road). :thumb:

Bottom-line: "Getting old is NOT for the faint of heart!"    I always tell people I'll be mellow when I'm dead...
