Dash LCD Breva 1200 - Blanks out then back to life
« on: April 12, 2017, 05:14:58 AM »
Hi all,
Any thoughts please on a little thing i experienced today on my Breva 1200 2V.
The LCD screen on the dash went blank altogether for my ride this morning of around 1/2 an hour. So just the green background. Speedo, tacho and fuel level all working fine.
Stopped the bike once i got to work , turned off ignition and back on again, and everything was back to normal with LCD screen working fine.
Rode home tonight and again all good working well.
Conditions dry and relatively cool, dash has otherwise been very good with no misting etc as sometimes reported by others.
Thoughts/feedback please?
Thanks. Don

The first thing I'd do is take the dash connector apart and squirt some Caig DeOxit in it, wiggle it around, etc.

I agree with Chuck.

But be prepared to join the ranks of failed dashes.

It might also be the ignition switch contacts need cleaning pin 1 of the dash connector is supposed to have 12 Volts on it from the key switch.
If it happens again see if you can manipulate the switch to get a better contact.

This Norge has the terminals marked, I assume it's the same.

And so it begins.     Eventually, it will stop coming back to life.
This is a problem that has plagued several Breva 1100, Sport 1200 (and I think Norge) owners here.

It happened on my 2006 Breva 1100 at around 17k miles.  I replaced the dash with a brand new one.   That one last 7k miles.    I replaced it again, this time with a used one.    I sold it a few thousand miles later, not wanting to ever have to replace it again.

Carmo in The Netherlands can repair some issues so might be worth giving them a shout before you buy a new one

Tris is correct .... Carmo has successfully repaired several BNS1200 dashboards.  Unfortunately, my issue was directly associated with the LCD panel, and (at that time, maybe still) Carmo had no source for a replacement LCD panel, so I ended up buying the Breva panel from Jas67.  So far, knock on wood, all is well.

If a Breva 1100/1200/Norge dash is working without any problems (yet), would spraying Caig DeOxit on the back of the dash be a good preventative measure to help stop potential problems? If not, what?

The failures I'm aware of have been caused by moisture. There is a thread around here somewhere that talks about waterproofing a Griso dash.

When mine was repaired, Carmo told me there was water damage. They repaired the water damage and then double coated with water proofing material. The repaired dash has now been in my 1200 Sport longer than the original with no problems.

Although the dashboard on CARC bikes isn't the 8 valve time bomb known as 'flat tappet failure,'  it is and has been an ongoing problem for several years.

Piaggio and or Moto Guzzi management, if you take the time to monitor this website, you might want to consider 'manning up' to this problem.  There's several things you could do:

Since you don't mfg the dash, but buy it from a 3rd party, you (Guzzi Management) could put pressure on the 3rd party to:
- provide the current owner of a CARC with failed dash with a new one or a repaired one.
- or ... maybe next best, Guzzi, you could provide the current owner with a new dash with a 2-3 year warranty
- or ... instead of buying the dash from the supplier and applying the Guzzi markup, simply pass it thru to us at your cost
- or ... provide us with a warranty depot that would accept our defective dash, and replace it with a refurbished one

Guzzi, there's so many things you could do to act as a responsible company.  Please, as we say here in the USA, "step up to the plate" on this issue.

Here's that thread, from last summer: http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=84968.20.

I'd moistureproof the circuit board if I were you. Good luck.
