First Eldorado long trip. Advise?
« on: April 14, 2017, 03:44:01 AM »
I am not new to long trips, (*Took my Honda Rune to Mexico last year) but The Eldorado has not been outside of Nevada yet. Going to ride to Northern California via Death Valley, then inland, over to the coast, up hiway 1, (*Until the bridge washout) up through Monterey and over to the SF bay area. 2 day ride out, 2 day ride back. 5 to 6.5 hours a day, Solo journey.

My 2016 Eldorado has heated grips, big windshield, fog lights, all three leather bags, USB charge port, Cell phone holder. My "Equipment" will be all my cold weather gear and summer gear, new Sena 10C, (*Helmet mounted bluetooth music, video camera/still camera, phone hookup) first aid kit, some tools, flashlight, extra batteries, etc.

Anything else to consider?

Takin' your time?

Toolkit including tire patching stuff, chargers for various electronics, GPS (you didn't mention), air pump (some good small ones are available), use some of those reusable grocery bags if you don't have liners (that will make taking stuff inside at night easier and handle middlin' rain). Pick your tools to match what you can actually do - no sense taking it if you haven't learned how to do that yet.

If you are using your cell phone as a music source to the Sena, keep in mind that a steady stream of music will run the phone's battery down in 2-3 hours unless it's on a charger via USB or similar. The Sena should easily handle 5-6 hours unless it's running camera for extended periods; the earlier SMH10 versions would last 8-11 hours of music playback on reasonably new batteries, but would more quickly deplete when intercom or other functions were added to the load.

Let me know if you want to borrow a cross-seat waterproof bag or the air pump etc. - remember, I'm in LV. You have my contact info from previous PM.

I thought this was going to be about a loop frame Eldo, either way check the fluids and keep gas in the tank. Both Eldos would enjoy that trip

Did much the same at the tail end of our 2013 trip on the Cali Touring. It needed petrol at predictable intervals and was overall a bit of a heavy, under-suspended turd with rotten steering geometry but otherwise it was simply press the button and ride.

That is a beautiful set up you have there!

I think you have it all covered.  Have a great time, and please let us know how it went!

G'Day from the Oz my Eldo brother...

She is just the right machine for the ride and loves corners...the seat is generous & easy (if you are still on the original) despite having some back problems the one thing it has never given me is a backache after long rides.... so ride on safe...Have a good one and keep the photos coming in......

Cheers

Soooo...If you're not new to "long" trips then you'll not need to get much advice from here. The bike won't know the difference from Nevada to any other state I'm guessing. The further you ride in one direction, the closer it'll be to home, (it was built in Italy). Just chuck your shit on and ride the bugger. Make sure you have your spare key. I zip tie mine under the tank or fairing, it'll be no good if you lose yours and the spare is at home. How many miles has the bike done ?

If using Debit Card and traveling state to state, give your bank a heads up lest they "protect" you and deactivate card in the middle of your trip.
