My Road trip to California video...Done!
« on: April 25, 2017, 03:46:58 AM »
As promised, my video of my road trip from Las Vegas to Northern California is done. It was filmed using the new Sena 10C helmet bluetooth video/camera/music/phone/everything device.

There is some shots of the newly opened Talbot motorcycle museum as well as some beauty POV, (Point of view video.) It was 1200 miles round trip. did the ride in 2 days going out and decided to "Iron butt" it back to Vegas in one day, 525 miles.

The new MG Eldorado performed flawless and was surprised how well it handles. It will be an annual trip i think...Enjoy!

Wow!  That was great.  Reminds me (first part) of my trek across HWY 15 in Nevada back in 1986.  On a V65SP!!

Love my Eldo, wanna do that ride!

WOW thanks, nice to meet you too.

Ok, since you fired the shot, what was so wrong about my question? And before you answer, is it possible you're coloring the perception with your own prejudice?

For the record, I'll probably never complete a single Iron Butt ride. 1000 miles in 24 hours (ya know the basic, introductory one) is not my thing. And I'm not sure the reward would be worth it for the effort.

But I've seen guys complete the 100CCC   or the whole Iron Butt Rally on a Sportster. So 500 on an Eldo doesn't move the meter.

Hell back when I had a Road King (something I'd compare favourably to the comfort of Sky's Eldo) I remember riding back from CA to PA zig zagging across the country doing 500+ miles a day for a week and frankly that was easy. I'd not call it an Iron Butt. I woke up the next morning wishing I was still on the road.

But I didn't feel the need to go into all that. I just was questioning why 500 or so in a day felt like one.

There could be a range of answers:

* I know Kev, but man it was friggin hot out.
* Yeah right, but I was so hungover each mile felt like 2.
* There were these crazy crosswinds, I was fighting them the whole way.
* I'm still working on the setup of this bike, so I was cramping in my _________ (shoulder, neck, hip, knee) by each 100 mile stretch, it was horrible...

Or any number more possible answers.

All I did was ASK WHY 500 was Iron Butt.

But some seem to think that was akin to spitting on the guy. So much so a guy who barely participates in the forum and therefore has really no interaction with me (no give and take from which to draw conclusions) feels emboldened enough to just judge from afar and directly insult me.

Well, sorry bud. You don't know me. Maybe you'd feel the same way if we met in person, and if so, I'm sorry that you're that delicate.

I am a no BS kinda guy, so maybe that's an asshole to some. But I'm also fiercely loyal to the truth, the first to say I'm sorry, the last to give up on something and always willing to try again...

So OP sorry if you took it the wrong way.

KB, maybe we can start again and I can try and convince you there's another side to those comments you see?

Or maybe your mind is made up and I just wasted my time.

Oh well...

Hey Road, nothing personal, but I thought I'd quote you as part of an answer to KBuck, hope that's cool. If not, say the word and I'll delete.

Come on, give the guy a break!  That's a big deal to someone who is not used to it.

Maybe KBuck it would have been better if my kids were already in bed and I had time to research this and posted:

I am not new to long trips, (*Took my Honda Rune to Mexico last year)

I dunno... My original question and MY stated intent (of curiosity NOT necessarily INSULT) still stands.

Who is KBuck and why is he ripping Kev M? Don't rip him!

Kev M, I'm not a fan or a hater, but I do read your posts and mostly agree. I don't see a problem here?? Except...

One mans Iron Butt is another mans short jaunt.

To me LA to Yuma is an Iron Butt on my "stock hard foam" seat on my '72 Eldo. I stop at about 100 miles for gas, a short break and to light a smoke. I could go farther in a day, but about 100 miles at a shot.

Fair enough.

Though I would hope a modern touring bike (Eldo 1400) would be a damn site easier to cover miles on no?

I dunno, I remember when Jenn used to look at me from the saddle of her 883; once we passed 300 for the day. It was that "find a motel NOW look" [emoji4]

My '04 EV rides like Cadillac, but the seat is not all that comfy to me. Maybe I need my butt/hip bones looked at by a Doc, the stock seat hurts me faster than my hard Eldo seat. I am trying a gel pad to see if that helps.

I have never sat on a 1400 class Guzzi seat, though I would like to!!!!! I would hope it's very comfy!!!!!

Heck, what does a Commercial jets Pilots seat feel like after XXXX hours??? Not sure I'd like that???? Or maybe I would?????

1 time not too many years ago I did 800 miles from San Diego to Yuba City, CA on my MuZ Tour 660 single riding back home from a Guzzi Rally in 1 day.  It wasn't to prove anything but it just worked out that way for various reasons.  I didn't get any badge for it 'cause I don't do things for that reason.  Could I do it today? Maybe, maybe not.  It would depend on how the day went and if I was up to it.  That is the longest bike riding day so far I've done in my life.  Done many 500 mile days, that's for sure, no matter what rig I've been on.  But if the day riding includes mucho curves to deal with, then that long a day riding is probably not going to happen.

KBuck, Whether you actually think that or not or think you can justify such a comment I neither know nor care.
It was however a totally pointless and unnecessarily agro post that contributes nothing to the conversation  and should not have been made.

Sort of reminds me of the guy that shouts out insults to strangers in a pub looking for a fight.

Sometimes Kev, I'm a bit surprised that a guy with the training you have, still manages to lead with his chin a fair bit. Your initial intention to have a thinly veiled crack at Sky was pretty obvious and you only made it worse by throwing up your hands and saying " I didn't mean it like that !" You do court controversy and I like your posts for it, Norge Pilot used to do the same, but you're gunna have your detractors...But I take your point that you're not a normal type of hombre. I'm pleasantly surprised that Sky actually took his bike for a half decent run and bloody good on him for it, you didn't need to diminish his experience.

I really want to ride (from GA) to California.  Money, while a bit tight, is not the concern.  Comfort, while at my age is relative, is not an issue as I plan to stop frequently.  However, time is something I seem to have less and less of.

Personally, I love to read about other's road trips.  After all, that is what a motorcycle is really for, IMHO.

As for giving Kevin a hard time, doesn't that particular subject warrant a separate thread
