The guy who wrote the Honda Benly manual ....
« on: May 05, 2017, 08:55:46 AM »
He's still alive and he's still working, he's up to date and working for a cell phone company!   Great to see older folks still being productive ...

So does the case live up to that description?

365.2422 degrees, I think.

I believe he also wrote these words to live by from an early Japanese owners manual..."Go soothingly on the grease mud for therein lurks the skid demon".

Nothing like a good old 305.  They do tend to run a little "Fat" until the sweet spot is dialed in, but damn what lines.........

My Honda C100 manual must have been written by a different linguist; "beware the greasy puddle ,wherein lurks the dreaded skid demon". Same demon, different hazard.

It also encouraged you to "tootle melodiously' on the horn if something/someone was in front of you.

Of course - it had to be melodious, you were on a Honda and therefor
"a nice person". Not for you the outraged squawk of the unwashed.

Some US manual writers had a SOH back in the seventies when I worked for Hewlett-Packard .

A blank page in the service manual had "this page intentionally left blank" printed smack in the middle of the page.

Another wag included a full page graph for converting hertz to cycles per second in the back. One axis was logarithmic scale to make it look technical.

A 9810 service manual from memory.

Those C100's were amazing bikes. When we first got married they (we had two) were our main form of transport. The Matchy only got hauled out for longer rides and although we had an old dungbucket car we couldn't afford the petrol; the budget was VERY tight! Those Hondas transported us and the kids all over the place. The C100's were a pushrod motor, the C50 was an OHC. The song was referring to the C100, the C50 had not yet come out. The main bearings were about the same size as the ones in the Matchy! No wonder they were bullet proof. :thumb:

Yeh - and the matchy wasn't bulletproof was it.

Enjoyed listening to that song again and the watching the cheesey video I hadn't seen b4 .

Corporates seemed to be latching on to the idea back then , like the Kodachrome song we were being brainwashed.

IIRC, there was an early Guzzi LoopFrame manual with similar context issues.  Owners debated how to check the oil level?  Just push in the dipstick?  Or thread it into position and then remove for level inspection?  The book instructions were something along the lines of "Insert the dipstick and screw it up completely."

Sometimes even English to 'Murican is dangerous and a bit confusing . Some of the old Brit car and motorbike manuals mentioned that if the engine failed to start to check the petrol level with a torch
