Datil, to the Eclipse

Most of you probably know there is going to be a Solar Eclipse on August 21st of this year. It will be total across a long path from the pacific northwest, across the Rockies, Kansas City, Nashville, and out to sea at Charleston, SC. Now, the 21st is the day after the Datil get-together. I think I may take off from Datil on the 20th and head up to Wyoming so I can see it. What a hoot that would be. The path crosses I25 at Wyoming milepost 111, which is right where the Glendo State Park sits on Glendo Lake. There are some nice campsites there... Sandy Beach campground on the east side of the lake looks good, and appears to be exactly in the center of the eclipse path. Now, it is about 720 miles from Socorro to Glendo, So it means a real Iron butt ride... maybe I should leave a bit early. The eclipse is due to hit Casper at 11.44 am, as close as I can figure it, so, just before noon at Sandy Beach. Any riders interested in hooking up, perhaps make an event of it? I am tempted, since I will already be in Wyoming to continue on to Alaska, seriously.

Most folks leave the Datil Rally on Sunday morning (August 20th) anyway, so you should be fine!

That's not even 3/4 of an IronButt - it should be do-able in 11 hours or so, maybe add an hour for Denver traffic.
Let's see - if I went up there, I could come back down 191 almost all the way. Now, that would be a nice ride! It would mean an overnight in Moab - how awful! Maybe I could cut over to Utah 24 and 12 and come past Bryce Canyon...

Remember that the entire event takes some time. You want to arrive early and leave late -- in your case, after a nap.

Campgrounds are full, motels too. Traffic will be bad. You will probably get stuck in traffic before you get to the area of the total eclipse. You would have better luck going 287 to Medicine Bow to Casper, but more miles. Check out the WG Eclipse thread.
I wanted to go to Datil this year but have decided that the eclipse is priority. I have a line on wild camping on a ranch near Casper, but it's not confirmed yet. Planning to go up Friday, or Saturday at the latest.

I heard on the News that prime viewing would be in Kentucky. Motels are sold out.
