magnetc tank bag recommendations?
« on: July 19, 2017, 07:11:10 PM »
I'm looking for recommendations for a magnetic tank bag for my Le Mans 1000. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles, just medium capacity, dry and with a map pocket.I know, I know, what's a map? I love maps and don't have GPS. I've never needed it in the past and don't see the need for it now.

Thanks for any tips!

I have two that I use regularly.

One is a small Cor-Tech that I use for day rides.

The second is a larger RKA that I use when on the road to rallies and just touring.

They are both high quality pieces at moderate cost and work very well.

Best,

Carlo

Only thing I would caution against is scratching.  Make sure you lift the magnets off, don't slide them.  Clean tank well before installing.  They do stick to the tank very well.

I have the smaller of the two that Firstgear sells under the model name "Onyx".  It's pretty nice.  The larger one's measurements indicated it would be too big for the top of my Mille's tank.

I like the Ortlieb. It has magnets (removable) & straps both, is waterproof (fold down at the back & w/proof access zip at the front), comes with a removable map pocket A4 size. The only thing it doesn't have is pockets, otherwise it's brilliant. Comfortable fit on the 1100 Sport & the V11, so should be fine on the LeMans.

I won a Cortech Tri-bag set where you get 2 tank bags on a base, both Cortech.  I got a magnetic base for the smaller bag and use it on my bikes w/metal gas tank.  Use the bigger bag w/my bikes w/plastic gas tanks or vise versa.  Heavy duty quality or you can stack them on the same bike if you have the room.  Have yet to scratch a gas tank.  :thumb:

Map cases.  I bought one from Ortlieb that was actually big enough to hold a std road map opened up.  Much better than trying to refold the things along other fold lines all the time.  To attach I attached snaps that lined up with the smaller map pocket on my tank bag.

Figure I actually contribute to what bag I used.

I am NOT sure how different is between V7 & Leman tank, but this is what I used to use until I gave it to my friend

Held well, large enough to hold most of my small tools and some paper and pen.

For years on my T-3 I have used Buse brand. It has held up excellent and I have also used it as general travel luggage. Very pleased.

Thanks again for the recommendations and advise. Now, how to decide??? I guess I'm between the firstgear (price point and great reviews), and the ortlieb ( a bit pricier but waterproof, and, it's the only bag Aerostich carries and I've never been disappointed with their offerings).

This is so typical.  Riders ask our opinions on X subject.  Then they admit they already know what they prefer and go that route.   I'm not going to respond to these references any more.

Thanks for what?  He already knew what he was going to do.   I suspect he has already made the purchase.

Geeez Arizona Wayne. Not sure how I offended you. I truly appreciate everyone's input, and, based on that input, I did some comparison shopping and tried to narrow the field. Honestly, I had no preconceived notion as to which bag to buy and I still haven't made up my mind. If it makes you feel better, I'll have another look at your choice. In the meantime, try not to assume the worst of people you don't even know. I'm really not an ass.

Alright kids, stop squabbling!
You can reduce/prevent scratches on your tank by cleaning/polishing as some have advised.
And you can get a placemat at Walmart/dollar stores to place in between the tankbag and the tank.
trim to fit if you like

Oh ... and when you take it off and have to put it on the ground. Put it down upside down or the magnets grab all the bits of rust/steel in the dirt and transfer them to your tank

I just use a cut piece of T-shirt material under the bag, no scratches yet.

10's on thousands of miles on bikes using magnetic tank bags and never had a scratch. It's removed only for gas ups or overnight parking at hotels. I keep the bottom clean and the tank top clean, always set the bag on the seat when fueling up. Worry less, ride more!
