Your walking distance and mine are quite different, Landis. (And it's uphill!) my advice would be to stuff your saddlebags before you get to Moto Richmond -- and buy enough to share with the hungry denizens when you arrive.

It IS uphill but it's right on the edge of Church Hill, about 2 miles maybe, a 40 minute walk.

When I'm waiting for service at the shop, and I've done all the getting-in-the-way and tire-kicking that the shop can stand, I'll take off and walk somewhere, usually in Manchester to see if there's any new interesting scruffy little Caribbean cafe or something.

Next time, Broad Street and the Proper Pie Shop!

House of Pies in Hollywood - endorsed by the local police.

Curious if this thread pans out or ends up being another oatmeal thread

Now how could that happen?

Oatmeal Pie

INGREDIENTS
1 (9 inch) pie crusts
4 eggs
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup light corn syrup
1/8-1/4 cup melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup quick-cooking oatmeal ( uncooked)
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Beat eggs until frothy.
Combine sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt in a small bowl.
Add eggs; mix well.
Add corn syrup, melted butter, and vanilla.
Mix oatmeal.
Pour into uncooked shell.
Bake for 45 minutes.

Crikey:  1:1 ratio of Sugar to Oatmeal...that might be a bit sweet!

I'm surprised we haven't seen the introduction of Blue Agave nectar here as a substitute!  :)

Darn it - I'll have to start another thread for the UK based pie eaters - which is likely to be savoury biased

My brother-in-law from across the pond tried to explain to me why you would wrap potatoes in pastry, but I just wasn't gettin' it...  I get the meat part, especially a nice homemade chicken pot pie, but all those carbs make me fat just thinking about 'em. I'm not much for pierogies either...

I'd rather wait 'til the end & have pie.....  ;^)

Not only a cup of sugar but a cup of straight corn syrup too!   Yes, really sweet, as befits an adaptation of the definitive Pecan Pie recipe ....

Moody's Diner in Waldoboro, Maine.

They make a crazy good Peanut Butte Pie and of course an apple pie that is just plain excellent

Never have tried the blueberry pie, perhaps a short rude this weekend to try it out.

As far as home grown pies go we have some wild mulberry trees. You haven't had excellent fruit pie until you have had a mulberry and rhubarb pie.

The Wooden Spoon Café in Gentry, Arkansas is the go-to place for pie in this neck of the woods.

I think their pies also go to the restaurant in Pocohontas, IL -- about 10 miles east on I-70.  I particularly like to get there in the early Summer and have a large slice of their fresh cherry pie, with a bit of ice cream on top.

Being married to one of the world’s best pie makers (and nobody makes a better pie crust than my Fay), we seldom buy pies "outside".    Her specialties are apple, pecan, chocolate, lemon meringue, coconut, and coconut cream.

But we were our for a ride yesterday, the purpose of which was to ride to the National Forest Ranger Station in Natural Bridge Station, Virginia, which is the nearest place where they sell Lifetime Senior Passes for the National Parks in the US.   The price is still $10 (and has been since 1982), but it’s going up to $80 soon (as discussed otherwhere on this very board), and so we figured we’d better get ours now, it’s the bargain of the century.

No prettier rides than the one from my house over Balcony Falls to Natural Bridge ..

So having got our passes, we stopped for lunch at the Natural Bridge General Store.

It’s just hard for us to take pictures of our food.   I know that it’s a tradition here and I do it whenever I remember, but I’ll never get over my antipathy toward looking like a social media weeny who lives in their smartphone.   So you’ll just have to take my word that my reuben sandwich and Fay’s chicken salad were EXCELLENT …. !

We didn’t get dessert, and a good thing too, because on the way home we stopped HERE:

The lady who runs this store will be 101 years old on her next birthday, but she’s as spry and wide-awake as most 70 year olds.

This is her from when she ran it as a general store in the 1930s; the loaf of bread she’s holding was 10 cents …

This is her husband and their twin daughters from the 1940s …

Today her twin daughters run the place as a Pie Shop known far and wide for the quality of their pies.  Since Fay is an expert pie maker, we’re “hard graders” when it comes to pies, but I can tell you that THESE are as good (I won’t say “better” although I might mean that) as any I’ve ever had.

We were too busy eating our blueberry-strawberry pie, and our buttermilk pie, to take pictures, but you know what a pie looks like, and they have 25 different kinds to try.

And then it was time to leave …. with us reflected in the window behind a Bible verse.   While we were there, the daughters and Mama broke out in an acapella Gospel song that was the equal of anything you’d hear recorded anywhere, but we didn’t record it – no good at cameras ...

So that’s why we didn’t fix a pie at home!

If you're within 200 miles of Elon, VA, it's worth a day trip.

Lynn's Restaurant or down the street at Lynn's pie shop.  Or better yet take the 6 mile ride on Santa Rosa Creek Road to Lynn's Farm Store & enjoy a piece of berry pie there.

I have reached the stage of my life that I relish the thought of a motorcycle quest (I am going to see the eclipse on the Stelvio). But what shall I ride to afterwards? Perhaps for the pies. There seems to be a wealth of info on the best pie places, and I find that one of the things that I like most in life is stopping for a cup of coffee and a piece of pie. Did that in Reserve and Pietown, NM recently. Maybe I should head towards Texas to try these places, and just keep going...
