Woodruff's Store and Pie Shop on VA130 near Elon, Virginia (3297 Elon Rd, Monroe, VA).

The baker's 101 year old Mom holds court there most days.   Pies are legendary.

Many rides taken to Peggy Sue's on US 36 in Walhonding, OH. They usually have 7-12 types depending on what time you get there.

Only cafe in Dover, KS on HWY4 SW of Topeka.
Only cafe in Durham, KS on K-15 about 25 miles S of Abilene.
Carriage House in Yoder, KS on K96 S of Hutchinson about 12 miles.
All serve excellent pies and usually have a variety.

I HEAR the pies are pretty good at Portage Pie in Westfield, NY, home of the WNY Guzzi Rally in the Vineyard.

I can't actually say for sure, because if I was to ever BUY a pie, I'd never get another one from The Little Woman, & that's not gonna happen, 'cuz she TRULY makes THE BEST pies in the world - TRULY...

It is a nice place to ride to, however....

Strawberry/Rhubarb at Traverse Pie Company, 14 locations in MI

How could I forget a Pasty pie? Must be north side of Mackinac bridge for one of those.

My wife's kitchen.  :thewife:

I'll bet it isn't.

I'll bet it's MY wife's kitchen!       Thousands of pie crusts and she knows how to get them perfect .....

Maybe a Guzzi pie cook-off is in order; chili is SO H-D.   Pecan, coconut cream, chocolate, apple, lemon meringue, the possibilities are endless ...

Tell me there's no such thing as a radish pie.   Tell me it's really rhubarb.

I planted too many radishes last year, and we had a lot of them.   We tried anything to keep from just eating them raw and salted, which we'd tried too many of.

We found a recipe for lightly coating them in oil and salt and roasting them in a pan until they were cracked open and lightly brown.

They were HORRIBLE!   They even smelled bad, and tasted worse.

No more cooked radishes for me, even if someone surrounds them with a pie crust ....

Garden radishes that are ripe before harvesting are pretty good , but I can't imagine roasting them

The Proper Pie Co. in Richmond, Va., has both sweet and savory pies. One stop shopping for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert!

Stopped at Pietown, NM a week ago Saturday and was longing for some blueberry. The didn't have any... just mixed berry, blackberry, dark cherry, apple, lemon, and a half dozen others. Not the best place for pie, perhaps, but very close. If only they hadn't run out of blueberry. Not bad for a tiny town out in nowhere. The picture is about 30 miles south of Pietown.

To my mind, it's necessary to specify the kind of pie before rushing to judge the establishment. When I visit a pie specialist, and it's in season, I always ask for rhubarb pie. If they have it, I'll always try it. If they don't (and it's rhubarb season), then I have to believe their heart just isn't really in it.

That being said, you can get a fine peach pie (rhubarb, too) at the Verellen Orchard fruit stand on Van Dyke Hwy north of 29 Mile Road in Romeo , MI. The peaches come from out back. Wandering further afield gets you to the Achatz Pie Company in Armada, MI. They have other stores and sell in local supermarkets too, but I prefer the storefront locations. This area is a good starting point as there are several orchards and a lot of fresh ingredients nearby.

Of all the places I've been in Utah its tuff to beat the Burr Trail Grill (in Boulder, Utah) for pies. As a bonus, the Hells Back Bone Grill is a block or two away and is consistently voted in the upper echelon of Utah  restaurants (although The Burr Trail Grill's offerings can stand on their own any day).  I believe Hells Backbone was voted #1 this year by one of our larger state newspapers (seem to remember that).

Honorable mention for the cherry pie category: My mother-in-laws. Made from scratch from her grandmothers recipe she brought west to Glasgow Montana around 1900. Unstated but binding family rule in effect that large projects requiring my labor (yard fertilization-tree trimming-loading trailers for dump runs etc.) are paid in fresh pie.

Here in McKinney Texas is a place called bill smiths cafe.  Been there for 50 years or such.  Decent food but there's a waitress there that makes all the pies from scratch. Coconut cream pie is to die for! Anyone comes here for pie call me!! Instead of the usual Milwaukee ruffage out front we'll have some real bikes out there! Lol

Lots of great places...will have to throw these on a map!

I'm thinking there must be a place in Montana for HUCKLEBERRY pie that I'm missing, but I can't remember where we stopped last time thru...may have been Red Lodge...

LeRoy, I agree 100% on the rhubarb.  My grandmother made it with just a touch of sugar, no more than that. Up here in Massachusetts, it's hard to find rhubarb pie without strawberries and with it's natural tartness.

And....because of my fondness for Gooseberry pie, I just planted six gooseberry bushes, with one cutting to be planted next year.

Your walking distance and mine are quite different, Landis. (And it's uphill!) my advice would be to stuff your saddlebags before you get to Moto Richmond -- and buy enough to share with the hungry denizens when you arrive.

There used to be a pie shop in New Cumberland, WV. If she didn't have it, come back in 45 minutes and it would be ready.

I hauled to cafes for a number of years. Some would get the frozen Mrs. Smiths pies and advertise them as "home baked". Some sold a lot of cases Mrs. Smiths pies every week.

IMHO The pies in Pie Town are over rated and too expensive for me.

Enjoy,
Tex

Darn it - I'll have to start another thread for the UK based pie eaters - which is likely to be savoury biased
