If it still has the original chrome-bore cylinders, they'll need to be replaced if one wants to ride the bike regularly. Otherwise, "load up one chamber and spin the cylinder" because you're playing Russian Roulette...

More like playing Russian Roulette by loading one bullet into a Colt .45 automatic ....

I guess I forget that (since we're so into these Guzzis) that the first thing anyone would check on an 8-valve would be the tappets, and the first thing anyone would check on a Loop would be the cylinders .... Is the current "chrome cylinder upgrade" still under $1000?

Gilardoni cylinder kits are currently $670 a pair at MG Cycle. Add in gaskets and o-rings and you're still well under $1000 unless you pay someone to do the job for you. For another $160 in parts, plus whatever your local machine shop charges, you can (and should IMO) rebuild the heads.
