Earl Campbell of the Blues
« on: August 31, 2017, 06:02:42 PM »
Greetings from the sunken lands.  Hope you all are doing well.  I have watched Hurricane Harvey come and go, the Guzzis in the garage await dry roads and a willing rider which should come before too long.  Watching flood videos on TV and YouTube is getting old here in H Town so diversions are in order.  This is a recording for Freddie King who if you ever saw him on stage was a force of nature, like Earl Campbell of the Oilers back in the day when they both made their mark.  Eric Clapton said the first time he heard Freddie play he knew he wanted to be a blues guitarist and try to sound like that.  Freddie played that Gibson with a thumb pick in order to bear down on it and make it drive with the same force as his vocals.  Definitely a Texas musical treasure.  Hope you like this.

Strange, I don't remember an Earl Campbell playing for the Oilers. Was this during the Gretzky era, or later on?

It was during the Gordie Howe era of the the Houston Aeros.  They played in the Summit Arena which became the Lakewood Mega Church.  I used to go watch him play on nickel beer night.  I think.
