Beach bars on California Vintage (2012)
« on: September 26, 2017, 03:12:54 PM »
I want to put beach bars on my California Vintage instead of the stock ones.  I know that they are 1.25" bars with tapered ends -- just want to know if anyone has done this already and found a set that they really liked?

I would like to go with the wide bull horn stile and they will actually give you the take offs at the harley dealership but the way the Calvin bars are designed nothing else will work without some kind of modification. We are limited to what we can use.

I'm not sure on the Calvin, but my '04 EV is 30mm and is 22mm at the controls. Might want to double check that before ordering new bars.

Does anyone know for certain what the bar size is?

The bars off the 1400 Eldo might fit your needs. They reduce down out at the ends. I'm not certain what the diameter is in the middle. I would have to measure them. Heading off to work soon so I can't do that until later if you want.

Tom H is correct...the bars you need must be 30mm in diameter. The 1 1/4" chubby bars on Amazon are 32mm and 1 1/8" bars are 28mm. I used California Stone bars on my Vintage, but they are not what I'd call a Beach Bar. You might need to change to a different handlebar clamp so you'll have more choices.

You can go 1 1/8" and use a shim, something like a strip of beer can to wrap around the bar at the mount. Remember the control area has to be the 22mm, 7/8" may work there??

I looked for bars for my EV, my choice was the stock mini apes and the Jakal bars.

Please let us know what you find!!

Sounds like the thing to do might be to ream the bar clamps out to 32mm -- I think there is someone out there that makes spacers to bring the bars back down to 3/4 as well, but I can't remember who it was.

Make sure you get an actual measurement on the bars you wish to use before machining the clamps. I came up with 32mm by doing the conversion math...

I tried a set of Pro-Taper bars on my bike once. At 1 1/8" diameter (28mm) the clamps were not able to secure the bars without shims. The California Stone bars that I use are pictured below:

My Calvins PO had put the stone bars on when I got it. I didn't like them as I had to reach to far and I like ridding sitting straight upright. He sent me the stock one which was an improvement for my ridding style. I would actually like them to be an inch or so further back and maybe higher.

Very nice.  I've actually taken the bags and extra chrome bits off for now.  It's stripped down, the pipes are taped and there's a lot of black where shiny bits used to be.  I'm kinda going for a "bobber-esque" - beach look.

Dan,

Two words, Rox Risers.

They do not have a 30mm set, so I used 1 1/8" and shimmed the triple tree side and opened up the bar side to fit the 30mm. I might have been able to use the 1 1/4" and shim the bar end, the tree end may have worked.

In one of your old post, there should be a picture of what I did.

If you like a 1.25 or 1" bar, why not get a pair of compatible risers and bolt some on?  HD risers fit the same way (bolts through the top tree).  I don't know what the knurl spacing might be on the bars.

Here's an example of 1.25" (random examples)

and here's 1"

Just a thought.

Thanks!

I will investigate.  I think there are some seriously excellent suggestions -- One thing I will have to do is make sure that the control cables are long enough as well.  I have a feeling that I will be doing some stretching exercises...
