which 2007 Norges are subject to oil pump failure?
« on: October 28, 2017, 11:57:56 AM »
I am considering the purchase of a red 2007 Norge with very low mileage. I realize that some of these bikes had faulty oil pumps. I tried a search of the forum, but didn't find a list of VIN numbers of the affected bikes. Does anyone know of such a list?

Aside from a potential oil pump replacement, what else should I do to the bike to make it road-worthy? New tires (originals still on)?, new alternator belt? new shock?

Anyone know how much it would cost to replace the oil pump?

Thanks,

Jon

I would not gamble on a oil pump failure. I would buy the bike and replace the pump with a new version. The pumps seemed to fail around 30,000 miles so you probably can make it home on the bike without a disaster.

It seems that there has never been a clear set of VIN that definitely had the bad pump. It was a manufacturing defect IIRC and some late 2006 to early 2007 production bikes were affected. The only way to know for sure is to take it apart. If you do just replace it even if it looks OK.
As for the other stuff,  new tires for sure! Old tires are dangerous and handle poorly.  Change all the fluids and ride it.

My Norge is a Red '07. They were the worst potentially, Roper has the good advice here.
Now 130,000 and never touched the pump, but that's 'cos I didn't know about it for ages. Advice from a local bloke up the road is, if it hasn't shat itself by now it's not going to. I would check/replace it if I was buying yours with today's knowledge though, a phone call will give you the cost.
Do read the articles here regarding lubrication of the  swingarm and suspension linkages and do the startus mod.
Is it that nice one here on the forum ?
PS. Do I see that you already own a 2V Norge ?

Huzo,

I did own a 2009 Norge; totaled it on a deer in early June, just a few days after I vowed to put 100,000 miles on the bike; it had 54,000 at its demise.  Yes, I might offer to buy the 2007 advertised on this forum. If I do buy it will likely replace the oil pump, the tires, the alternator belt, the shock, and the fuel filter. Will also lube the swingarm pivots and locktite the stands.

Guzzi Bob kept track of those for quite a while. The failed pumps clustered around a November 06 build.

Yup, and from memory this is the first time I've heard of a failure in a bike that wasn't a Norge but a Sport makes sense as they are basically the sma bike and therefore it would make sense to assemble some in the same sequence as the Norges.

Why-ever did they change from the same old gear pump that worked for years?

And thanks Pete for the great explanation that follows

Apart from having a higher capacity and being less prone to cavitation issues at higher rpm the Gerotor type pump was part of the preparation for the swap to the 8V mill.

As the big block motor has evolved over the years there have been many changes to the crankcase and these have been achieved by comparatively minor changes to the dies used to produce them, the same is true of the timing chest covers and the like.

With the advent of the 8V it's oil cooling system required a separate cooling pump of higher capacity and the way this was achieved was by using two Gerotor pumps stacked on top of one another in the same location as the old gear pump. Space constraints as well as delivery volume needs dictated the twin vane pump and my guess would be that the swap to a single vane Gerotor pump on the last of the 2V motors was part of gradual introduction of changes to the dies used to make the crankcases and the machining operations required to produce the finished article.

If you look back over the years you will find many examples of 'Pre-emptive', (For want of a better word.) changes to castings that at the time seemed meaningless. Take the inclusion of a boss for a phase sensor cast into the timing chest on the last of the bikes that used points. This sort of thing is still happening and can be useful for trying to predict what changes will happen next in the model line up. Just look at the current smallblocks which have provision in both the rocker carrier and the cylinder head casting for a central spark plug and sufficient length in the shaft of the rockers to accomodate another arm for a second valve. While it doesn't indicate that a return to a 4V pushrod operated system like the Lario is in the offing it certainly would at least hint as to some sort of 4V system being adopted in the near future for that unit.
