Replace your brake hoses!
« on: October 29, 2017, 03:55:23 PM »
It's easy to overlook but brake hoses do wear out and usually it can not be seen from the outside. Many of us ride old bikes and this monster can rear its ugly head at the worst times!
So get some fresh hoses, maybe some nice stainless braided ones that will really make the brakes better.

I replaced them all on my Convert, seemed the smart thing to do. No need to on my Ambo.

They are only 35yrs old and not leaking. Small section on Cal2 rear, the rest are stainless or solid. One set not on the road and will be replaced w/braided. I always got mine from the local hot rod shop, easy to make up.

Best place for aftermarket braided lines:  Spiegler.  They have a proprietary system that allows the fittings to be swiveled to get the alignment right.  The set I got for the Centauro fit perfectly.

The Frentubo(?) set I bought for the Convert from MG Cycle fit perfectly, no need for swiveling ends when the hard metal lines are retained. Just align and tighten. Done.

I've used the Spiegler lines before and they are very nice and the swivel feature does come in handy for some models.

Old lines also swell under braking. Brake lines are something I always replace when I get an old bike, always SS.

I always used to make my own using Speedflow fittings but that is now illegal here. Too many cowboys doing stuff like re-using olives or just not knowing what the fuque they were doing, with disastrous results.......

will make up new hoses for about 20 bucks. Send them your old one, and you get a new one that's race car quality.

I recently purchased a low mileage '03 1150RT. Only thing that I changed was the brake lines, used Spiegler, very impressed with the quality!

I'm very satisfied with the Spiegler fit, function and quality of workmanship of the SS braided lines I put on my LMIV back in 2011.

Just out of curiosity, Hunter, but what did those hoses come from?
