Loop Transmission Swap. What Is Your Easy Way?
« on: November 12, 2017, 06:51:05 PM »
It's a given that we pull the seat, tank, running boards and the like. I normally pull the carbs and then the engine to do the change. Tried the slide forward to get the trans output shaft out of the u joint, then tilt the engine/trans forward so the trans is pointing at the top frame rail about where the seat bolts. The didn't go so well!

What is your trick?

FYI: I hate to pull the swing arm. I'd rather pull the engine out and set it on the floor than the swing arm.

I'll be pulling off the usual bit's tonight or tomorrow. Looking forward to your EASY WAY!!

Thanks!
Tom

Well, you won't like my way then. I remove the rear wheel, rear drive, brake pedal, shaft and bellcrank, swingarm, etc. Pull the transmission bolt along with the footpegs and shift linkage. Loosen the front engine bolt, tilt the engine forward and pull the transmission off. Takes two hours.

You make that sound so easy :undecided: Sounds like a back saver though! I will consider doing it that way.

A bonus is that dropping the swingarm isn't that hard to do.

If this was my EV your right. I have always done battle with the brake rod assy., especially the bell crank thing to get the rod out. Once done, the swing arm is easy once the rod is out of the way.

And you get to grease the bearings and splints that freeze up on you if you don't. Don't ask me how I know.

I also need to pull my Eldo's motor to find where my oil leak is coming from.

Take off Gen and go up and forward, be careful you don't knock off brakelite sw. I take pipes off, trans comes right out. No swingarm removal.

Back in the day, it was:

Jack up the gas cap and back a new bike under it.

What he said

Plus I remove the headers, battery, air box and carbs, and to gain room to work the tool boxes will come off with the transmission frame plate,

And while you have the transmission out check that the banjo bolt for the oil sump breather is not leaking, mine was, twice (fit two new crush washers and re-torque the banjo bolt), remove the flywheel and clutch and check the rear main seal.

I also needed to fit a helicoil into the engine block as the banjo bolt threads where stripped.

Oh, that one is simple.

It's coming from your Eldo. Either the motor or the gearbox - probably both
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

On older bikes, I just put more oil in.

If it does't bleed it's not alive, therefore it can not have a soul. I hate bikes w/no soul.

Steve
When you say "up and forward" do you mean that the engine front frame bolt is out and you are moving the motor entirely up and over? Not just tilting it on its front bolt?
