V7ii rocker cover and cylinder head torque specs
« on: November 20, 2017, 01:29:28 AM »
Hi all,
I am looking for the torque specs for my newer v7ii rocker cover and cylinder head bolts/nuts.  I am about to perform the first valve clearance check before changing oil.  Many thanks in advance.

Mark the position of the screw head with a tape across head and cover. Then cut the tape between head and cover before loosening bolt. When remounting, tighten the screws back to same position. I have used that procedure many times. No leakages yet. I have used that procedure 3 times without changing gasket. If you change the gasket, procedure may not work. Tightening torque for 8 M6 bolts in covers should be 8-10 Nm or 5,9 - 7,37 lbft according to my motor manual.

I don't get it - I tighten mine to 'moderately tight' by feel, and never had a leak or stripped any threads or other disaster. Everything just works fine.
Why is getting the tightness perfect so important?

Aren't they calling for retorqueing the cylinder head during the 1st service for v7ii

I wasn't able to find V7ii engine manual.  Instead, I looked up the specs in the V750 Breva engine manual.  Breva and V7ii have different engines of similar design.  It calls for 42nm for the M10 nuts and 28nm for M8 nuts.  Does it sound right.  Does Guzzi have an engine and trans manual for V7ii 6 speed trans?

Can't remember if the II's still use kingerlite gaskets or if they had moved on to the steel laminate ones. If Kingerlite they will need re-torquing to whatever is in the book for the single TB engines which I think were the same as the B7.5. If they are steel laminate then you don't touch 'em.

for the rocker cover bolts? Never used a torque wrench on 'em in my life.

Oh, I agree.
But.
In my experience, the mark of an inexperienced mechanic is grossly over torqued fasteners. Believe me, I've seen my share of that. I bought a BMW airhead (!) yes, Dusty, I actually did.. where I had to replace *every* fastener that was normally adjusted. "Tighten it until it loosens, then back it off a quarter turn" was his mantra. If a guy is trying to learn, he should pay attention to torque specs on these simple things until he gets a feel for it.

I thought that one of the changes with introduction of the V7II was no longer having to re-torque the heads at the first service.  Is the head gasket part number different?  I am not at my home computer or I would look up those numbers.

Just did the valve adjustment today.  The head cover gaskets are indeed metal laminated ones; so I guess it's reasonable to assume the head gaskets and the cylinder base gaskets are of the same type.  I didn't touch the stud nuts today; somewhat stoked to see how Guzzi is finally doing the right thing by choosing the metal gaskets for better longevity.  Factory valve clearances were tighter than the specs.  I had to increase clearances on all 4 valves, 0.15mm for intake and 0.2mm for exhaust.  I am going to check it again in 300 miles and see how the clearances hold up.  I am liking this, especially the prices for gaskets and washers are very affordable from AF1 racing.  I used to pay almost $100 just for a BMW head cover gasket.  Life seems better with a Guzzi.

Sorry? But what possible relevance does the rocker cover gasket have to the head gasket? Simply because one is a coated steel shim bears no relevance to whether or not the head gasket, which performs a completely different function, would be constructed in a similar, (I'd hope not!) way.

I have used values from my motor manual for V7 for my V7 II
Central M8 bolt was not possible to tighten.
Copied from manual:

1 Central stud bolt M8x143 2 20 Nm (14.75 lb ft) Loctite 542 Not possible to tighten.
2 Short stud bolt M10x182 4 42 Nm (30.98 lb ft) -
3 Long stud bolt M10x214 4 42 Nm (30.98 lb ft) -
4 Nuts - pre-tightening M10x1.5 4 25 Nm (18.44 lb ft) -
4 Nuts - tightening M10x1.5 4 42 Nm (30.98 lb ft) -

8 Outer head cover screws M6x52.5 8 8-10 Nm (5.90-7.37 lbft)
-
Helipic value for the M10 bolt is then correct. Small inner bolt value differ. Impossible to tighten without removing the tank.
