(NGC - Parachute question
« on: November 30, 2017, 06:46:42 PM »
In the current issue of "Soaring" (a publication for glider type folk) in the classifieds is an add for a parachute for sale. The add claims that said parachute "has not been used in any way"
Okay...how many ways might one use a parachute?

Either to jump or to slow a dragster.

I would have it inspected & repacted THEN try it.

As the ceiling for decorating the gym for the dance floor for the Senior Prom?   There must have been thousands used for that.

This is when Yoda's advice comes in handy.

"DO, or DO not.   There is no try!"

If first you don't succeed, try, try again ... except with parachutes.

The Arkansas National Guard used them as ground targets for A-10s.

Is that before or after they are used to jump out of a perfectly good airplane ?

Compared to new yardage, parachutes were very cheap when I was a kid.  If still true, I'd think parasailers, sail boarders, and hang gliders would be looking for them.

When we were kids we bought a surplus parachute from the army/navy store and made a huge box kite out of it -- big enough to tow a couple of us up Washington's Long Beach beach on a CT90 for our daily-ish beachcombing expeditions.  We had a 200 fathom spool of commercial fishing line on a free-spooling hand winch where the front basket should be.  We'd use the wind northbound and then knock down the kite and use the motor for the return trip, dragging the kite like a travois.  We needed two or more kids to manage the kite.  One alone would get carried away or the bike would.

We watched from 500m as those Warthogs chewed them up with 30mm. If those chutes were serviceable at the beginning, they were useless at the end...

Yea, there are many possible uses. The wording of the ad just struck me as funny since this ad was placed in a very nich magazine not like in Craigslist or Ebay. I think the person placing the add was trying to emphasis that it was basically new in box.

Chutes used for their intended purpose are serious business and need to be repacked and re certified regularly.
I have 4, 2 seat packs and 2 backpacks.
Used for safety...not cheap!

There's a court case in progress here at the moment where hubby is accused of tampering with wifeys 'chute so that she would plummet earthwards and he could take off with the girlfriend.

Not sure if you can class that as a "use" though

When the repack interval was changed from every 120 days to every 180 days the price of a repack went up 50%.  What a coincidence.
Still cheap if I ever have to deploy mine.

Always wore one in single seaters
DG 300, LS 4, ASW 22 etc...
But would NOT have had the guts to use it.
Don't tell me I would have if necessary, would have shat myself and died of the smell anyway.
Too gutless... :embarrassed:

Let me put it this way . Jumping out of an airplane WITH  a parachute is always better than doing so sans parachute .

 Single sweater ?
