The new year begins in two weeks
« on: December 08, 2017, 09:19:03 PM »
It will happen at sun down on the 21st of Dec. I do not know why the world does not recognize this fact.
And fact it is and has been since the earth began to orbit the sun in a tilted axis.
It is the time when the day ends with the shortest daylight hours of the year, and begins to have longer days following.
I suppose it is because of some arcane idea from the Vatican or something that we don't count this as the beginning of the new year.
To me it only makes sense that this day represents the end of one year and the beginning of another.
I like to refer to it as hump day, as in over the hump and days begin to get longer. And no close minded religion or politician can prove it otherwise.
This is of course only true for those of us in the northern hemisphere. Those who live upside down don't have this particular thing happen until six months later.

The Roman Senate decreed January 1st as the first day of the New Year in 153 BC, and it went from there.

You can celebrate the beginning of the New Year any time you want to, including December 21st.   You can observe lunar months if you want to, rather than some artificial 30-day month.

What difference does it make when someone else wants to celebrate New Year?   Do your own.

The naval day begins at 12:00 Noon every day; I think I'd like it decreed that it start at 6:00 because that's about when the sun comes up.

And why do we drive on the right side of the road here and left side in the Commonwealth countries?   I think everyone ought to drive in the middle, it only makes sense.

And not only that, but .....

I'll say it again, what is it with humans and keeping track of time?  None of God's other creature care.

Other creatures don't charge compound interest, or have drag races or football games.

Well here in Aridzona unlike the rest of you in the USA, we don't change to daylight saving time.  Far as I'm concerned the rest of this USA is an hour off half the year!!  :boxing:

I remember in `99 riding from norCal to Iowa for the MGNOC National when we stopped for the night in Nebraska we were informed that state had 2 different times since it was in the middle of 2 different time zones.   At the Rally we didn't get 2up long distance plaque because we weren't on a Moto Guzzi (Suzuki VX800 instead). Good thing I wasn't expecting to get it.

Well, one can point out all the creatures that hibernate, and those that spawn by the full moon only in certain months, and those that have other rhythms that are at least as calendar-accurate as most of our feeble efforts...

Sasquatch Jim, on the logic you supplied does that mean that those of us that live in the southern hemisphere should have new years in just over 6 months time?

to Ready, Yes.

To Lannis,  The reason the English drive on the left side of the road is because their custom began so that you would pass an on coming person on the side of your sword hand.
Here in the new world, our custom began with the rifle laid across the horse in with the
front of you with the muzzle pointing left.  The better to apply it to an oncoming person if needed.  Most of Europe followed our lead, the Brits just kept a stiff upper lip as if the still carried a sword.

Sasquatch Jim, would you like to be the master of arms at the Winter equinox order of the Druid. We use a Festivos Pole and air our greviences. It doesn't last very long due to loin cloth is the mandatory dress.

My little dog named Guzzi can tell time. She wakes me up about 6:30 in the morning and asks for a treat a 5:00 in the afternoon.
Takes her about two weeks to adjust to the time changes in spring and fall.

Our Jack is exactly the same.   Jumps up on the bed to get us up at 6:15 every morning (varies a few minutes with the sun, but not much), and importunes us for his 5:00 snack each evening.

If you forget, there's not doubt about exactly what he's asking for, and the time is spookily accurate ...

I dig it. That always should have been the mark for the New Year.

What would we call a "Flat Earth Society" devoted to that?

I beg to differ....biologica l clocks set in ecological timeframes seem to be as accurate as any time piece humans may have invented (ref: e.cleven's doggie guzzi) only for more defined/refined reason...life and death those that miss their alarm...a fluid continuum that is ridiculously accurate for the right reasons...that said "if your trains on time you can get to work by 9" Randy Bachman :)

Kirby, story is true. She painted a line and prevented accidents. What they didn't say was, she got run over twice painting those damn lines. LOL
As for the the time change , I can't believe people don't rise up and revolt.  I can see dealing with a 2 hour daylight change, but 4 hours is depressing.

I fact the Christmas may be the pagan new year party.

In Danish, Christmas is "Jul" which is pronounced the same way as wheel (hjul) and probably came from ancient times when the vikings celebtrated the turn of the year (wheel) and the sun gaining power again.
