SP III for sale
« on: December 20, 2017, 01:36:49 PM »
Saw this one on the local CL.

Looks clean and in a quick conversation with Jamie Muller (Grand Rapids Guzzi), he says it's a very good runner.

Don't know much more about it.

My thoughts exactly! and the add states the transmission was rebuilt as well, whats up with that?......That bike should be barely broken in with that mileage!

Well, things can happen to any bike.   At least with the engine and tranny rebuilt by a known shop, you don't have to worry about the condition of the running gear.

OR it could be (and I've done this before with Britbikes) that a PO bought the bike from someone who knew nothing at all about the history, or maybe it had been sitting for 20 years, and the next owner got it cheap and said "I'm just going to go all the way through this bike just to be sure ...."

Looks like a pretty one.   Every time I see one a little tear wells up in my eye that my legs don't fit on them ....

That looks like a nice, clean example and a good bike for somebody.

A friend of mine bought an Ambassador and decided to completely overhaul it at 8000 miles, concerned about the chrome bore cylinders.  Much to my surprise he found that the rear main bearing had been completely bodged using a bearing shell from another engine.  That sure surprised me!

That aside, I hope for the seller's sake that nobody reading the CL advert assumes the ADA reference has something to do with this, instead of the name of the Michigan town in which he lives!...

Ada township MI.  Jamie is a long time member of MGNOC.  Not sure if he's still the MI state rep.  He might have gotten the bike from a PO.  I don't remember him riding one.  More on Californias.

I wonder why the motor had to be rebuilt?

I had the same curiosity - sent Jamie a text and his response...

"The owner likes spending money on the bike. Was just a top end freshening on the motor. I did the technical advising on that one, but not the work. The tranny had simply a leak at the shift armature, so the guy sent the thing out for a total rebuild. Bob Eish did that work."

I've heard these SP IIIs when it's hot the heat get's uncomfortable on your legs.  On the CX100 & SP I, IIs this isn't an issue because the way their lowers are set up you don't get any heat off the jugs unless you're not moving.

That's why I took the lowers off my CX100 so I could have the heat when I want it and  spread my legs out when I didn't.

It’s not a fun bike when it’s hot and humid outside.

I'd say it has been painted. No SPIII on side covers.
The mufflers are replacements. Originals are all cone shape to the end.
The bags are new also. The original say Guzzi not Givi.
Also looks like a recent seat recover.

I love mine!!!!
I was thinking $5K for mine after paint and good sorting with 83K miles.

What always worried me about these and the full dress Cal III is the lack of any crash bars to protect those ultra rare fairings!

Those are later model California mufflers which fit these and other bikes of the same vintage without modification. I have a pair on my Mille. They are stainless and most are chrome plated. Excellent upgrade in my opinion.
